The mantra, or even the name of the Medicine Buddha (Skt: Bhaisajyaguru, Tib: Sangye Menla, Chin: Yaoshi-fo, Jap:Yakushi) is beneficial.
Ven. Thrangu Rinpoche has said that a mantra is essentially an elaboration on the deity's name, and that any mantra is the shortest possible form of the sadhana. The Sanskrit mantra of Medicine Buddha is: Tayata, Om, Bhaishaye Bhaishaye Maha-Bhaishaye Raja Samudgate, Svaha. or, pronounced the
Tibetan way: Tayata, Om, bekandzeh, bekandzeh maha-bekandzeh, radza samungateh. Soha. 'May all beings benefit from the sublime love and power of Sangye Menla' is often given as the meaning but it is not a literal translation. Since the practice of Medicine Buddha is considered a Sutrayana practi
ce (i.e., based mainly on scripture) no empowerment is necessary, but it is good to attend one or to ask for one when you have an opportunity. Khenpo Karthar has said that the practice of Sangye Menla also has been found beneficial in cases of mental illness. And it is said that even hearing the
name Sangye Menla only once has benefits for subsequent rebirth, for the Medicine Buddha made 12 vows describing the various ways he can help sentient beings with their sufferings.

Goes something like this 'It is' the enlightened Medicine Guru, the great Medicine Guru, the King, so be it. This is the translation of the shortest of the medicine mantra. It's prety hard to translate AUM to english hey - so I just say enlightened. "This is" is also hard to translate - maybe "such is" or "be it".

In case you are one of the millions of people whom Western influence has been led to believe that meditation and devotional practice necessarily involve twee music and pictures of sunsets, none of these overlaid things are necessary, and may well be at least distracting, and at worst draw you not towards meditation, but hypnosis .. this is NOT the same thing!

i have been trying to find this on itunes or on a cd as well. could you please tell me where i could find it? or who is singing it. i purchased a medicine buddha cd and it was no good! it didn't even have the mantra on it! i suffer from anxiety and i would so love to have this song on my ipod so i can relax to it. thank you so much for posting it. it is beautiful!

Thank you for this wonderful connection to the Medicine Buddha. I have a postcard of the Medicine Buddha, which I used to keep on my altar, and recently found tucked into a diary of mine. It is a deep blessing to now hear and begin to learn this mantra. It is the gift of this International Day of Peace to my heart. Truly, to pray for healing and elimination of all sufering opens the world to peace and higher consciousness. May you be forever blessed and filled with light.

Thank you for posting this beautiful mantra. I have done the Sangye Menla practice often, and I have heard other recordings of this mantra, but none as beautiful as this one. Could you please tell me who the singer is?
