Check out this incredible, newly discovered, original play-by-play call of The Miracle On Ice, perhaps the greatest upset in the history of team sports. When the USA shocked Russia, 4-3, at the 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympics, Curt Chaplin was covering the game as a sports reporter for the ABC Radio Network. Standing on a camera platform in the crowd, he did play-by-play of the entire game into his tape recorder, capturing the event on tape forever. Now, after 25 years, these tapes have been rediscovered and matched to the video. The result is a dramatic, stirring and completely original experience for sports fans all over the world. Crazy to see goalie equipment size back then, especially Tretiak's. So small. The good old days. If only we could really reduce it now. But of course the PA is gonna lobby against any significant change to protect position-style goalies who benefit most from being big in front of the net.

Truly a once in a lifetime event! The spectators were on the edges of their seats in excitement the whole third period. After watching all the games it was as though we knew each player personally, and when Eruzione scored it was bedlam. Craig was spectacular and after the final 10 second countdown it was pandemonium in the rink.....I'll never forget it and have never seen anything like it. Hockey's finest hour!

pulling Tretiak was biggest blunder, despite his egregious mistake at end 1st pd. which led to the Johnson goal. that goal was key to the victory.

Well, even the best athletes make mistakes, Tretiak was an awesome goalie, for whatever reason in that first period, he was not at his best. He could have come out in the second and turned every shot away for the rest of the game. Pulling a seasoned veteran because of one mistake is unseemly. Thanks again for the vid Curt, my dad is very ill but loves hockey and Herb Brooks, I'll send this to him, thanks pal.

If they had lost to Finland in the final the US would have won the SILVER medal. The Soviets played for the bronze against whoever lost to Finland in the semifinals.

No...it wasn't the semi-final. The medal round at the 1980 Winter Olympics was not single elimination like it is now. At Lake Placid the medal round consisted of 4 teams: USA, Soviet Union, Finland, and Sweden. They played a round-robin format where each team plays each other once. The USA tied Sweden in their first game, beat the Soviets, and then beat Finland to win the group and secure the gold medal. The Soviets took the silver and Sweden finished third...
