Hacking the hasbro Interactive R2-D2 designed by Creature Labs and Voice Signal Inc.
I thought the outside of the r2 unit didn't fit how cool he was inside so I updated his dome electronics...
First let me tell you what you will need: (1) A loom of fiber optics (2) Sheet of very thin plastic (The kind that packages cd players and mp3 gear at your local drug store will do fine) Or almost any other consumer product with a flat wide plastic backing thats thin.-----This will be used to ac
t as faceplates to hold the fiber optics through the front blue status indicator lights and the rear colored indicator display. (3) Special LED display boards ( I made my own using icrediable small -the size of grains of salt- L.E.D.s. Since there is a room issue in the dome I made them on a flexab
le pcb sheet smaller than your pinky finger.) Even then I had trouble because the "neck assembly" in R2 kept getting in the way of previous circuts. Also the fiber optics needed to be trimed down to around 3 cm just so the neck IR sensor wouldn't fuck it up and his head get stuck in one position. 4
A clear round 'window' for his rear PSI light and 2 diffused filters. 5 A special circut for alternating the yellow long/green short LED in the rear PSI. You will also need to loom the wires together by twisting them then taking UL listed tape and wrapping it (the loom of wires) as tight as you c
an. You will also need to make your wires long enough to go over the PCB board in your dome and feed down the center turret of his 'neck'. If you want I can make some more custom LED boards and fiber optics the whole nine yards and sell it to you in a kit. Or if you want you can send me your R2 her
