that's crap... The sound miles' was aiming for was not bop, and coltrane was bop. I think coltrane is a great tenor and amazing at bop but his solo is definitely not appropriate for this album... same as bill evans... again an amazing piano player, one of my favorites. On the other hand Wynton Kelly does an excellent job on this solo and represents the feeling thatmileswants... Both coltrane's andkelly's solo have motives but kelly carriesoutthe motive longer and his development is better

I disagree. Your comment was very "technical", listen to this without evaluate the music with intention X or Y. I understand you because I play bass and guitar, but in that case I guess the solo fitted very well and sounded damn amazing. That's my opinion...
Ur opinion is urs ... ( 1 month ago by jazzdog2)
Ur opinion is urs and I respect that... but coltrane's tone is extremely harsh, I think the mood of Kind of Blue is mellow... almost cool jazz and coltrane destroys that with his harsh tone. Nevertheless Coltrane is a legend and a beast at bop and other styles of jazz
coltrane doesn't ... ( 1 month ago by atvfreelife)
coltrane doesn't destroy ANYTHING- if anything, his upbeat, bop style solo HIGHLIGHTS the laid back, cool sound of miles. It provides a wonderful antithesis and gives the composition a more convoluted complexity- makes it richer....more diverse...in my opinion :)

ok... so lets take apart the first thing he plays. He plays it 3 times... ok that's a motive I give him that. but he doesn't change it at all before he moves on. The only alteration is the beat it is played on... he goes on to fast bop improv afterwards

it's not like he just played with miles one time. miles obviously enjoyed playing with him and liked the way he sounded. and so what? so do I. De gustibus non est disputandum.

I'm glad I don't worry about the technical intricacies of this beautiful piece of music. It is my all-time favorite, and will stay that way, regardless of the theoretical debate raging in the background.

What is harsh to ... ( 3 weeks ago by Georgefunkanopolis)
What is harsh to one person is anger, intensity, even soul to another person (like me). Coltrane almost always adds a more intense, soulful, edgey (maybe angry) tenor to any musical "conversation" he's in. Thats probably why Miles liked playing with him to add that counter-balance to Miles' laid back approach

i love miles' solo in this song. Its a great solo and its simple and easy to transcribe especially for a high schooler who's learning jazz like me.

If miles didn't want Coltrane's sound, why did he play with him so much, and why did he say he was one of the best tenor players ever in his autobiography?
