Beethoven wasn't born deaf. His deafness developed when he got older. It's also in the movie Immortal Beloved, the one played by gary oldman.

beethoven was a genius. there are musicians who could look at the piece and hear the notes play in their mind, even without touching the piano to try out the melodies.

This is not a Romance, this sounds like an etude! He sounds like he is nervous! Everything quite fast, hectic... . I thought the Berlin Philharmonic can afford to play with better soloist, not with such middle-class-violinists! Sorry... .

i was reading a story about one of his string quartet rehersals and the first violin was quoting about how beethoven would sit and watch and notice the slightest mistake in tempo.
amazing :)
what are you saying ... ( 3 months ago by zeph7r)
what are you saying? It's wonderfully interpreted! It might be played a little bit faster than most of the interpretations in other recordings, but this is a just as valid interpretation choice as any other. You're just saying that because you're used to hear it being played slower, but that doesn't make this interpretation less accurate (oh and stop blaming on the violinist, it might even have been a conductor's choice).

I agree with "Belissimok"! It really sounds not like a Romance. He actually plays quite boring. But the orchestra is very good! They really should play with a better soloist!

He may have played in a quicker tempo. He may have played in a boarder mood. But the thing is...He can play it well in tune in live concert and simple. This is already very amazing to see young Blacher to play. BTW, do you know who he is? He's a former concertmaster of BPO and he is a soloist around the world and concertmaster of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra! Please.I think you should think of the goods before you can really judge. It's always TOO EASY to judge but rather difficult to admire!

I also agree with "Belissimok"! He playes like a solid student, nothing more. I don
´t mind a faster tempo to get a better flow, but he cuts all long notes, that´s why it sounds hectic. The music just doesn´t breath! The vibrato is also way too fast. The doublestops at 2:25 sound like an etude, many other spots, too. I´m sure this orchestra usually playes with much better and m
ore musical soloists. I´m really sorry, this is just not good at all!!!

Normally I don't advocate faster tempos, but in this case I think it's an excellent interpretation. Other performances of this piece are too schmatlzy - but this is crisp and joyful. When I hear this version I feel like it was the way the piece was meant to be played.
