1. Yes, cadaverr, your point is a good one. I wanted to say something on Krupa's behalf because I hear so aften about how Rich blows Krupa away, and I suspect it has much to do with his blistering speed. I would agree with your point and add that it can also go too far in the other direction, ie., of speed at the expense of soul, style and showmanship. But, of course, Buddy was not without these 3 drumming virtues, along with his speed. I argue that Krupa was not without speed also, as was...

2. ...evident in his earlier days. And of course, both drummers possessed incredible technique. It's hard to say which is better overall. I had the fortune to see Buddy play just before his passing, and he was unbelievable to watch. He had it all, along with wrists that worked like machine guns. But you know, my favorite solo is Krupa's Drum Boogie (live) on the Drum Battle album. The technical skill, soul and style is awesome. He really could make those drums talk. Heard it a thousand times.

I don't mean speed - I mean a tasteful, musical, perfectly paced solo that fits the music perfectly.
Shows yet again that chops don't mean much if you don't have a musical concept.

Disagree by all means, stevedrums. I take it that you are referring to Krupa here in this video. I did say that Gene was getting on in his years in an earlier comment. But yeah, I agree that Gene is not in his top form here, though he is still awesome, to me.

Thanks, MarkR1957, I'll check it out. And you're right about speed not being everything. The essential thing is a drummer's musicality. Krupa really had it. Buddy, too. Ha, I keep thinking of the analogy of a pianist who's the fastest in the world at hitting the piano keys vs a somewhat slower pianist with a lot more musical talent!

Never really cared for Oscar, but love Mr. Lewis.
Hank Jones is another tasteful piano man who comes to mind.
Interesting that the "Big Noise From Winnetka" video was filmed more than a year AFTER this one, with Gene's working Quartet at the time.
Gene's solo, and all around playing on that video, is really music to my ears.
It's simply great ~

No Travis Barker is not faster or better. He can't play Traditional (thats the way they're holding the sticks) on a drum set only on a single snare so they already got him there. Travis is good and everything but he's nothing compared to the these legeneds.

Travis barker is a veyr good drummer, lots of people say and think he is shit cause of his ex pop-punk band but also there are a lot of idiots who idolise him cause of his band and truley believe him to be the greatest drummer. His is very good but compared to these two he doesnt come close to what they play (mainly cause that aint his style.) Also he is not infact faster, listen to Buddy Rich's snare rolls on this and other vids up here and compare em to Barkers, Rich is a lot faster.

I think Travis Barker sucks he just goes out there and beats random things as fast as he can. These guys are the real deal when it comes to drumming. i love the "travis barker is better" crowd. because every time they compare TB to the masters like rich and krupa they do nothing other than demonstrate how completely uneducated and ignorant they are...like trying to watch a 4th grader talk about foreign policy affairs. plus all the TB fans are all teenagers or young college kids, who by virtue of the fact that they're teenagers or young college kids CLEARLY have the answers to everything regarding drums. and foreign policy affairs.

Dude I was being totally sarcastic with my comment about Travis Barker being the best. I think it's stupid when people say a certain drummer is the best because everyone has a different style and can offer something different. Travis is a good drummer....but that's it....he isn't even in the top 20 in my opinion.
