It's probably a million degrees out there, Patrick's nervous (it's fucking Live Earth, who wouldn't be?) and he's out of breath.
With a crowd that size, there's no response, no connection. He's a shy enough person as it is.
I've seen beautiful live performances by these guys, and the only reason Patrick's vocals aren't top notch here are for the obvious.

personally i don't think he did that bad he just wasn't right on when he was hitting the high notes in the chorus. and people you gotta realize that a lot of bands/artists have to sing/perform/practice almost every day and so their voices get a bit tired so they can't ALWAYS sing perfect
