Shawn was terrified-- that is why he could not escape. Devlin overpowered him physically, mentally and psychologically using fear and threats and rape as his weapons against poor Shawn. I totally agree and feel that what happened to this young man is terrible and unacceptable. However in O'Reilly's defense the kid was not only left alone in the house, but let out of the house, let to go do things with friends, he even had communiaction with police officers (stopped for being out after curfew) and never said anything to the officers, his friends, or made any attempt to leave.

I detest O"Reilly myself, but to be fair (and a thoughtful leftist) I see what he's getting at. Children who join gangs are often the victims of broken homes and poverty and seek refuge and social acceptance in gangs. He's trying to apply that theory to the kidnappings. I think he's wrong. Not to oversimplify, but the fundamental difference between joining a gang and being kidnapped is free will. I think brainwashing played a role in their submission rather than a need for social acceptance.

Well, to some degree the kid did seem to prefer it. But this needs further explanation. The kids could have left while Devlin was away. It is obvious they willingly chose to stay. However, Devlin clearly manipulated and brainwashed those kids, on top of molestation and kidnapping. O'Reilly here was misinterpreted because he's prone to being so blunt that he gives a wrong impression. Bottom line: Devlin is going to rot in prison where he belongs. I hope the kids get psychological treatment.

anyone who is somehow seeing o'riellys side of this must think that any of children who are today, and the grown-up who were in their childhood, are responsible and culpable for any and all abuses given to them. 'surely they could have told someone... a teacher, a friend, a relative, a police officer, called 911', blah, blah, blah... when i was an abused child, i can say for certain that if someone flat-out asked me if i was being abused, i would have said no. why? fear!!!
