This song is visotsky's view on war. A submarine sarrounded by underwater mines unable to surface, unable to get air and all of its crew bagging for someone to save them from suffication. he is a gebiouse to show his view on war through such a story.

I am currently studying russian at university and Vysotskyj's songs have helped me out a lot when it comes to memorising words. Mostly because his russian isn't very complicated and his songs are simply great. You have to at least partly understand his lyrics to appreciate his artistry.

Now you really surprise me. Your russian course must be very good! I would have never thought that his lyrics are simple for a foreigner :) ! This one yes, but 'Kupola', 'Pogonia' are some of the pinnacles of russian poetry. They are not elaborate, but very 'loaded' if you know, what I mean

Being both Vysotsky's and Dylan's fan, I must say that Dylan is no competition to this Russian genius.
IMHO, while Dylan's lyrics are impressionistic and somewhat mysterious/enigmatic, although mostly aesthetically pleasing, Vysotsky's lyrics are sharp as a razor. They cut through your guts, shake your petit bourgeois existence and reach every bone and blood vessel in your body.
There's no other artist like him. Although sometimes my favorite rap artists give me remotely similar feelings.
