by john newton in 1725 he was a former british slave ship captain.but after he became a christian thats when he wrote amazing grace the melody is unknown,so nobody still dont know who made the music.
but is something about those old songs,not saying that the songs today aint Good,but it had real spiritual feelings in it. God bless

SERIOUS? This woman captures the essence of the song. It is a simple song only if you look at it on a simple level. Mahalia has realized how much she needs God and God's grace. She sings to Him from the most inner part of her being. She realizes as we all should that she is nothing without God. The song is written to the tune of a slave chant, she captured that very well. One of my favorite renditions of the song.

you clearly do not know Mahalia Jackson... implying she sings with pride because she uses her deeply entrenched roots in gospel music shows a lack of discernment. She was the greatest gospel singer to have ever lived on earth, sadly enough, because there hasn't been anyone since who truly depended solely on the Holy Spirit to perform gospel music (no shucking & jiving). All involved in christian music should examine clips like this as well as get deep in the word of God to truly understand...
