I partly agree with ... ( 1 week ago by SssThsss)
I partly agree with you, ronvoa101, but this video is about 4th-5th grade books. It is true, children NEED to learn the basics before they learn how they work. But the video disqualifies the other books' way of teaching, since it's supposedly "useless and misleading". And that is a BIG mistake. Children should first learn what, theorically, multiplication and division ARE, shown different methods for solving them, and THEN move on to memorizing what's more convenient(not necessarily the old way)
The POINT is, ... ( 1 week ago by RedwoodTheElf)
The POINT is, Calculators shouldn't be allowed UNTIL the student understands what multiplication and division are, and how to do it effectively and consistantly without one. For an INTRO math book to advocate use of a calculator for anything more complicated than Sesame Street Math is irresponsible.

What's wrong with a reference on how to use the thing? All in all, it should be the teacher who should or should not allow the students to use calculators. But there's nothing wrong in knowing to use it. If, in any case, the students use calculators on their homeworks, their grades on the tests will show it. And that's pretty much how it works when you have someone do your homework for you.

Learning to use a calculator is (no pun intended) Childs' play compared to the kind of gadgets kids are already using by the fifth grade these days. A whole chapter on the thing is a waste of book space.

Still, you can't asume everyone knows how to use it. Some reference can't really hurt. And what gadgets are you referring to?

Where to begin?
Ipods, Playstations, Home PCs, etc...I've seen gradeschool kids walking around with PDAs for cryin out loud. The number of gadgets that fill our culture in the 21st century is immense...it's been a cliche since the release of the VCR that the kids are better with the gadgets than the adults.

Crock! A shill promotion through a condescending slam of existing products with one sided propaganda techniques while coattailling on Al Gore. The double digit technique she slammed from Everyday Math is solid and valuable.
26x31 is 20x30=600; 6x30=180; 1x20=20; and 6x1=6. Once you get it, you can do double digit math in your head by adding as you go... 600+180=780, +20=800+6 is 806! Tons quicker than old way and actually makes sense as you do it. If my mom I'd be really embarrassed.

Actually, although I don't use it, I think the partial products algorithm for multiplication looks pretty good. It does keep place values clearer. The addition problem at the end does have more addends, but it is not any more difficult than the one in the standard algorithm, since many of the digits are zeros.

For several reasons, I find this woman to be quite vapid and clueless. Simply lecturing on algorithms is not going to provide a student with the true understanding of math that is needed for higher level classes and math intensive careers. A person who has been taught to simply use algorithms is going to find themselves lost when the time comes that they need to CREATE an algorithm. The two books she insults, however, make an effort to not simply give a student algorithms, but seem to also

endeavor to make students understand HOW multiplication and division work. Come up with two ways to multiply? Great, that's excellent because it's getting the student THINKING which is the most important part of school. If you want truly intelligent students capable of creating their own formulas and who actually UNDERSTAND the math, then don't hinder them at such an

I'm going into my sophomore year in high school my school used everyday math and a system similar to the terc system and I would agree that I am one of those students that can not do simple math and I have been greatly encouraged to use calculator no in algebra, I am unable to most simple mental math, and struggle with out a calculator

If you need a calculator for stuff like 7*6 then you fail pretty hard, but that's not math. Math is not and never has been about calculating. It's about abstraction and forms, and that's exactly what these cluster problems try to teach. It's another question if it should be taught at that age, and if the kids are sufficiently prepared. But that's what is essential to college math and science. If you don't go for that, a calculator is everything you'll ever need.
Who the hell needs ... ( 2 days ago by sarrk)
Who the hell needs multiplication of simple numbers anyway. Complex reasoning and problem solving is all that needs to be taught efficiently. I dumped all my simple math knowledge when I hit college; 7 years on, still no problems.
Briggs: She isn't ... ( 2 days ago by twalfyearoldalert)
Briggs: She isn't clueless, she made a video bringing up good points. Teaching a kid abstract methods for simple things doesn't do anything the standard algorithm can't. Cluster method? more like cluster fuck. None of the examples in these books are useful for a 'higher understanding of multiplication and division', which are simple operations in the first place. The time-tested algorithms provide a way to deal with difficult numbers without a calculator. Relax with the pretentiousness.

1st year at most New Zealand Universities will see all Math done with a pencil and paper, calculators are not allowed for any tests/exams. I'm pretty amazed that they have all that tourism/geography in the American Math syllabus, I guess George was right - Childrens do learn & Rarely is the question asked: Is our children learning? *sniggers* Cluster :O)

As a junior in high school i noticed that many of the students in my calculus class had very low basic math skill. Like she said from arithmetic to trigonometry. Those that had lost the knack on average received lower grades in the class in general and were less likely to grasp the concepts. I have retained my skills having been on the math team where calculators are prohibited. Ultimate Question: 6*7 Ultimate Answer: 42

BriggsBU: I'm an electrician and I use simple math every day, and sometimes geometry and algebra. I did calculus in school, but there is a fundamental problem these days with young people entering the trades w/o a fundamental knowledge of basic math. There's no reason to dissect a problem of 36/6. There's one answer and no amount of reasoning changes it. As an employer all that matters to me is how fast you do it or remember it. The traditional method allowed me to take square roots w/o a calc.
