but leonard the one ... ( 2 weeks ago by Piglatinsuperstar)
but leonard the one who call him out! He call out a nobody instead of giving Hagler the remtach. he give Marvin a hard time about it till marvin give up and retire. Ray give all kind of excuses why he cant fite again just like his eye excuse he use for 5 yrs. Why nobody ask him about his eye in fites with lalonde, hearns, duran, norris & camacho? His eye get better? Why he call out Lalonde just like that when Lalonde never in big fite before?
Leonard did duck ... ( 2 weeks ago by Piglatinsuperstar)
Leonard did duck Tommy until he saw Hearns was not a threat. He could have faced off with tommy 1st instead of hagler but he waited for hearns to be knocked out again just to be sure. i cant believe he waited until 1989 to give tommy a rematch and duran a rematch. the hagler fite was bad enough stalling 5 years.
why he make hagler wait 5 yrs but dont make donny wait? he just call him out like that. I will tell you why. becuz don lalonde is easy prey, and cant fite.
As I understand it, ... ( 1 week ago by bowieclone)
As I understand it, Leonard had a second operation on his eye which gave him extra confidence to fight again.
I love the comments about making Hagler wait five years. Apart from the fact that they were boxers at different weights it implies that Leonard was in tip top condition when they eventually fought. This is the sort of myth that is peddled by Hagler when the truth is that Hagler had enjoyed unrival
led dominance in his division and Leonard had fought one fight in five years.
For the record ... ( 1 week ago by bowieclone)
For the record Leonard lost the first fight against Duran, won the second (and third - although that was just a pay day) when he fought his own fight. He had problems with Hearns in the first fight but nobody disputes that he won fair and square. And he won againt Hagler because he didnt' get drawn into a brawl like Hearns did. Leonard has admitted that Hearns beat him in the rematch although it was called a draw. That's a pretty impressive record and one that your bitter scribes won't take away
Hearns weighed in ... ( 1 week ago by bowieclone)
Hearns weighed in 2lbs under the limit in the first fight. That's his problem. But don't pretend he couldn't fight at that weight -when Leonard fought him Hearns was the highly revered WBA Welterweight Champion.
Leonard's detached retina forced his retirement. Sure, he had it repaired but didnt fancy it getting ripped up merely to satisfy Hearns' or Hagler's ego. But your inference is that he would have lost these fights when most of the evidence suggests this wouldn't have been the case.
that is pure BS. ... ( 1 week ago by Piglatinsuperstar)
that is pure BS. you want to fall for it thats you biz. I dont fall for it the 1st time. he just ckicken and dont want to come out. now he come looking for lalonde cuz he know he is easy. thats what it has always come down to: is he easy or hard.
and what blows your story out of the water is the fight he had in 84 this mean he is ABLE but not WILLING!! You see liar?
oh really? you say ... ( 1 week ago by Piglatinsuperstar)
oh really? you say like the comment Hagler made to wait 5 yrs. you say that then you can tell me why Tim Ryan say in ROUND 6 with 20 seconds left to go:
"Sugar Ray said Marvin had lost ALOT of speed and that he was counting on the SLOWNESS of Hagler" I got it memorized for people like you that say they like this question so go on and answer it.
He had more than ... ( 1 week ago by Piglatinsuperstar)
He had more than problems with Hearns. he lose almost every round. I ask you: is this the best Ray look? Cuz he look like shit! His own trainer tell him you blowing it son you blowing it. I ask you again: Is this the best Ray Leonard look in a fight?
The brawl not ray leonards problem the problem is ray dont know how to handle a moving target. Ray dont have the experience or tools. he is really just suited for spurts or flurries that are best used on older fighters on their way out.
his record not even ... ( 1 week ago by Piglatinsuperstar)
his record not even impressive!!! shit he dont even have 40 fights. when he 61-2-2 like Hagler before the Hearns fight or 111-1 like Robinson or 49-2 like Ali after Manila then he can stand with the greats.
All Ray Leonard is 35-3-1. that NOTHING!!!!! He get two gift decisions so he is really just 35-5
that is why tommy ... ( 1 week ago by Piglatinsuperstar)
that is why tommy lose. like gil clancy say on the tape "if tommy come in at 147 he is strong enough to last rounds 14,15 and win the fight"
it was not a great performance by leonard he didnt really do anything but manage a few haymakers and one of them caught tommy. leonard didnt win it, tommy lost it in the late rounds. he caugh harder punches in earilier rounds and didnt go down.
if he didnt fancy ... ( 1 week ago by Piglatinsuperstar)
if he didnt fancy it getting ripped, why is he fighting Kevin Howard? Why he fighting Hagler? Why he fighting lalonde? His eye not an issue anymore is it? Why he fighting shot Tommy Hearns? Duran? Terry Norris? No one talking about his eye now. he risking his eye with Camacho and he is old now! Why isnt he concerned about his eye now? so his retirement never forced,he just cant handle the competition. Bowie, instead of Howard he could be fighting Hearns instead of duran! why no Hagler or hearns?
Whether he would ... ( 1 week ago by bowieclone)
Whether he would have held on at 147 is pure hypothesis. The facts are that he weighed in at 145 which was his choice or his bad planning or whatever - it's not Leonard's fault. He fights what is in front of him and wins. Get over it. What gets me is that Leonard's detractors keep coming up with these excuses - Like Hagler would have won with a smaller ring and a 15 round fight. Maybe, maybe not. But they agreed to the fights and lost in classic encounters but you're too churlish to admit it.
There's an article ... ( 1 week ago by bowieclone)
There's an article in Sports Illustrated which disputes your somewhat partizan synopsis of that fight. Hearns was quality, he battered Duran and stunned Hagler early on and Leonard struggled against him but he came back down to Welterweight to fight him when Hearns was tearing up the division. If he was scared of him, he'd have stayed at Light Middleweight. Leonard didn't duck anybody but he gave himself the optimum chance of beating them, That's not cowardice, it's intelligence.
That was round 6 ... ( 1 week ago by bowieclone)
That was round 6 which Leonard won of course. Leonard made no secret of the fact that he saw weaknesses in Hagler which gave him the confidence to beat him, particularly that he struggled with right hand leads against Mugabe. What is your problem? Why should Leonard step up two weights to fight Hagler and risk blindness in one eye? Is it just so that you can't bad mouth him on the internet?
I think the defeats ... ( 1 week ago by bowieclone)
I think the defeats of Hearns, Duran and Hagler speak for themselves. And so does your comment about not counting Ali's latter day defeats but choosing to include Leonard's (and then going on to fabricate results!). Is there no limit to your small mindedness?
For the same reason ... ( 1 week ago by Piglatinsuperstar)
For the same reason he come out and fight everyone else in his comeback and still risking his eye. you know the answer but you scared to give it. you say he like schmeling and all of a sudden "he see a weakness" why he not see it before if he do HBO for 5 yrs when this fight proposed and covering hagler fights? he asked but he scared to take it. now when he is OLDER and maybe slower & all of a sudden interested? his eye still at risk! Now dont be chicken like ray leonard and give me the answer.
you mean he wait ... ( 1 week ago by Piglatinsuperstar)
you mean he wait till they beaten down. He cant do that with Micheal Nunn-that why he never fight him! Nunn will punch holes in that big head of his--bam! one shot and it over. that what ray leonard afraid of. He say to himself Roberto Duran safer I will fight him now.
SI is not reliable. they got a writer there who cover Norris-leonard and call it 116-112. Everyone else see it 120-108! Dumb writer see but dont like to print what happen. They never write bad if you are Ali or Leonard
that is becuz ray ... ( 1 week ago by Piglatinsuperstar)
that is becuz ray dont really win those fights. the judges just give him th fight with hagler he dint earn it. everyone know that!and he lose to hearns so he is really 35-5.
Now i ask you a question before: the hearns fight in 81, is that the best ray leonard can do? Becuz he look like shit. Hagler a better fighter, norris a better fighter, duran a better fighter, camacho a better fighter.
I completely agree ... ( 1 week ago by bowieclone)
I completely agree with this comment (sweetsugar69). It's incredible for Leonard's detractor to harp on about how he didn't fight them at their peak as if when he did fight them he was at an advantage. Like you say it is quite the opposite, they were active fighters - Hagler was completely dominant and Leonard came back after 1 fight in five years and won. It's an incredible achievement but because people think he's flashy and cocky they just can't bring themselves to accept it. It's pathetic.
You can take your ... ( 1 week ago by bowieclone)
You can take your pick from Sugar Ray's fights. You can pick the gutsy come from behind demolition of Hearns in 81, the outclassing and humiliation of Duran in their rematch or the taming and outclassing of the so called Marvellous Marvin in '87. Plus countless other explosive knockouts against lesser fighters.
piglatin is a ... ( 1 week ago by sweetassugar69)
piglatin is a complete idiot and i don,t think he has a clue about boxing bowie! when hearns lost to leonard he chose to go up to lightmiddle and campaign there ! i don,t think piglatin has any idea what a detached retina is ! in 82 he was advised my the doctors and his family to retire and not risk his eyes! piglatin eyes are so full of jealousy and blinkered that he just won't won't admit leonard was an all time great ! leonard was voted fighter of the 80's by boxing experts!
Exactly. He goes on ... ( 1 week ago by bowieclone)
Exactly. He goes on about Leonard dodging fighters and yet it was Leonard who dropped back down to Welterweight to fight Hearns - who then, like you say, switched to Light Middle. They could have just stayed at different weights and shared it out between them. He fought Duran twice at the peak of Duran's career (Duran was past it against Hagler and yet still went the distance), the only reason he probably didn't fight him a third time in the early eighties was because Duran was in such disgrace.
Then of course ... ( 1 week ago by bowieclone)
Then of course there is also Benitez who was supposedly the bees knees before Leonard stopped him in his tracks. And then Hagler - an incredible victory against all the odds. Is taking on somebody who is unbeaten in 11 years and totally dominant in a higher weight division when you yourself have had one fight in five years dodging somebody? Like you say, only an idiot could think that.
While he only had ... ( 3 days ago by blakelandes)
While he only had 40 professional fights, he defeated the best as well as many others. The only fight he lost in his prime was to Duran who is ranked by nearly ever boxing expert to be in the top 10. Ring Magazine ranked him as the 5th greatest p4p. And I'll just throw this one out there for no apparent reason but leonard was ranked 9th. So if you still don't believe Leonard was one of the best you're an idiot. But for the record I, still doubt you'll change your mind since bowie clone failed.
