john prine wrote this one. although im not a john prine fan, i AM a johnny cash fan and johnny did this one too. in prines orginal version, he sings "jesus christ died for nothin' i suppose". i DO NOT agree with that BS so i sang it the way johnny did. "dad musta hurt a lot back then i suppose". enjoy ....by the way...got the idea to do this while watching one of gavduggans videos...it was a john prine song that made me think of this one....what up gav?

what up brother, I'm glad that my John Prine cover inspired you to pull this one out. What an awesome, heartfelt performance. I'm very new to the song actually, just watched Cash do it. I've seen Cash at Austin city limits online before but they never showed this one. Cash does an amazing job but I guess you've got to give it to Prine for those awesome lyrics. Anyway great cover, you really made this your own, 5 Stars.

By the way totally respect you taking out the original 'Jesus Christ' reference, although I think its important to add that this probably isnt a statement of belief by Prine. Its from the point of view of Sam Stone's son who has good reason to be at odds with life and religion considering what he's seen happened to his father. I can understand Cash not singing it either, just thought I'd try and put it into context.

I like Cash`s version.I think the reason he changed it was he knew it was offensive.But a Liberal raping a monkey overtop a Bible while listening to boyGeorge wouldnt get that.Sounds Good.The song not the souless liberal part.
