no one can honestly say he cant shred. Shredding is not meant to be completely melody based. Also prog rock is more about flashy playing than anything else. So in his genre Herman Li and Dragonforce are brilliant.

I agree that the first four guitarists you named are good composers, but Laiho is not super good. He has some awesome guitar chops, but the music doesn't really stand out...

well that's just personal preference. i think he makes some great riffs and some awesome solos. so back to the point. herman li. he is neither a good composer nor a fantastic player. i just think he gets a lot of undeserved credit.

Herman Li is only known because of through the fire and flames on guitar hero III. People say they're the fastest just because not too many popular guitarists shred nowadays. (and by popular, I mean like bands that are constantly on MTV, rock Band, and Guitar Hero)
