and now there are millions and millions of idiots out there giving their work away for free. What's wrong with wanting to make a dollar from your art? How's the artist supposed to make a living? Free culture at the expense of the artist. How typical. Created by a lawyer... How typical.

In fact you can make money from CC licensed stuff. Check out magnatune for example, it's a record label and the artists there have CC licensed music. You are encouraged to share it with friends, but it doesn't allow commercial usage.

I think you shouldn't criticize what you don't know... I was skeptical about CC at the beginning... but then I read Lessig's books... it's not a fact of working for free... it's allowing other creative persons to use and improve your job for non-commercial purposes by creating a second life when your work has ended his commercial life... I recommend to read his books.. to widen your perspective....

Mate, you're the retard for using an established band like Nine Inch Nails as an example. What about the struggling independent artist? hmmm?
Easy. They should ... ( 6 months ago by spazdor)
Easy. They should waste years of their talent and effort to get signed to a major label, only to end up with a recording contract which the label only signed in order to lock down the copyrights and keep them from competing with the other established artist they're already backing in the genre. They can then record 3 or 4 releases for which the label provides only the bare minimum promotion required by the contract, and the band can escape 5 years later, bereft of any remaining love of music.

ljsab: I think you are missing the point of Creative Commons. It is about helping individuals to redefine the rules covering their works if they make the personal choice to do so. There's nothing wrong with wanting to make a dollar from your art - Creative Commons isn't about destroying copyright, in fact the licenses only work BECAUSE copyright law EXISTS. Also, Creative Commons is a great way for the struggling independent artist to release demos.

With Creative Commons, you can get a really good license to your work. My brother created a Halo mod a couple of months back. He could not find a site to put his stuff on where he could make a custom license free. I introduced him to CC. After that, all his work is CC. He can even modify his license in REAL TIME!
