Sure they "suck" genius; that's why Kurt Cobain himself cited R.E.M. as an influence. In addition- the John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page, and Robert Plant have all (at one time or another) have stated an admiration for this musical outfit from Athens Georgia. Wouldn't you know it- Led Zeppelin and Nirvana are among your favorite bands!

R.E.M. was my band in the 80's and they will always be the most influentual band in my life forever. Like the Beatles, they had it & you could not manufacture their chemestry. They were the first band I ever saw perform and that was in 1985. I can still remember almost everything about it when they played at Memorial Gym here in Nashville.

I have this album and love the song. But it has always bothered me how Bill (Berry , Drums) and Peter (Buck, Guitar) seem almost embarassed to be a part of the video. The way I look at is if you are going to sell your soul to MTV, you better smile and play along when the camera is rolling. I was a fan of REM before this video and forever after. But it really made me think about who was calling the shots in the band.
