The Bobby Orr Rush -- Catch Me If You Can!!

Uploaded by: 85highlander
Video Description:
Remember the pre-cable days huddled around the old black and white TV, fidgeting with the antenna to get WSBK TV38 to come in to see the Bruins?
And who can forget doing a jig to the opening tune by the Ventures ("Nutty")! These clips are a little "grainy" and seen best when viewed in the smaller screen but they are a reminder of the days of watching the Bruins before NESN (great reception today, but the team was way better then). And, o
f course, the best Bruin of them all (and greatest all around player ever!) wore Number Four!

bobby orr was amazing but the one thing that has changed so much since then is goaltending. these guys look so bad. they are always out of position or indredibly far out of the net challenging shooters. not just in this video but in most old time hockey vids goalies just seem to have no idea what they are doing compared to the way todays guys play.

You don't think Mr. Orr's moves had anything to do with the goalies being out of position?
Robert Gordon Orr was born great. It's that simple!
If this were true, ... ( 1 month ago by squannacook)
If this were true, it was true for all the shooters. Why weren't they leading the league in scoring? Truly terrible goaltending was evident in the high scoring eigthies, not when Orr played. Check out the goals per game average during his time. Plante, Dryden Tony Esposito, Parent, etc would excel today, especially if you made them michelin men like today's over padded goalies.
The astonishing ... ( 1 month ago by TomBoston191)
The astonishing acceleration gets most of the attention, but people forget that Orr could do everything at TOP speed...stickhandle, stop on a dime, dart left or right...and then top that off with a deadly shot equally accurate from the forehand or the backhand. That's the sort of stuff that can make goalies look bad. (and defensemen too...) Also, Orr's slap shot was clocked many times at over 100mph. Orr would own all of today's goalies too.

Someone mentioned the goalies in "those days", well the goalies nowadays, if they had to wear what they wore "back then", it would be the same result. The goalies now, use the size of their stuff to help them make saves etc...

I think Orr would be very good but not as dominant as he was back then cuz he was fast and a good shot is a recipe for success

Bobby Orr .. where ... ( 1 month ago by BostonBruinsNumber4)
Bobby Orr .. where to start, the fact that he was the greatest defence man ever alive? Or that he was better then most forwards? Or was it just his self modesty and his pure love of the game? I think those are just some small things that define the greatest player ever on the ice .. NUMBER 4 BOBBY ORR!

Intelligence, vision, intelligence, speed, intelligence, accuracy and so smart. I'm a big Gretzky fan but Orr was something else. We'll never see such a good defenseman for sure.WOW

It looks like there's so much more open ice than in today's game. I dig how the boards are blank: no ads. Gotta love #4!

It's kinda funny when hockey knowitalls always look for the "next gretzky". I'd like to see the Next Orr to play.. :) That would be something :D
if Gretzky was put ... ( 2 weeks ago by gamefreak1502)
if Gretzky was put on the ice against Bobby Orr in the 1970s...gretzky would get destroyed...Orr would do circles around him and he would never be able to catch Orr. Lol geez...i wonder how "great" gretzky would of been if he was in Bobby Orr's time...he probably wouldn't even know what to do with the puck if he was facing Orr. #4 yo!!!!
itz kinda weird ... ( 2 weeks ago by gamefreak1502)
itz kinda weird when you think about it...Orr retires in 1978...and Gretzky starts his pro career in 1978...so itz like a great player retires and another great player starts his pro career
Simply put, Robert ... ( 2 weeks ago by EchoHawk509)
Simply put, Robert Gordon Orr changed the face of hockey forever. Which is something Gretzky never did Wayne was an excellent player though had he played in Orr's era, he'd have been embarrassed. Being a forward it was expected Gretzky would score. I've seen both of them play plenty of times and Orr walks (err, skates} away as the best in the game.

No taking anything away from Orr but those early skaters are horrible and the goaltenders are a joke

lol ur absolutely right...gretzky had to score since he was a foward...but look at Orr...the freakin guy was a defensman but he basically played all positions because he was that good to do it..and lets not forget about his goals lol
I wish there was ... ( 1 week ago by tnix80)
I wish there was that kinda open space and goaltending equipment today (they did make some adjustments). would make the gifted goalies stand out from the crowd and the gifted scorers dazzle. you know who though he doesn't mention him as an idol plays like orr? Mike Green. Most aggressive puckhandling defenseman in the league at like 22, has very soft hands for defense. The guy could be a great forward, although he's no orr.

The real stat..the ... ( 6 days ago by a3her)
The real stat..the one that wins games..the only stat that truly counts is this. While you are on the ice who scores and how much. While on the ice Gretzky has 3520 goals for 2285 against..a game average of .83 (1487 games). Orr has tgf of 1651 and tga of 781 for a 1.46 per game average (596 games, 66/67 n/a). Much of Gretzky's career he was a detriment to his team if there was no power play,Orr's numbers never came close to being inverted..Gretzky was horrid as a 2 way player for over 10 years
lets not forget ... ( 5 days ago by gamefreak1502)
lets not forget that Orr only played for 8 years and Gretzky played for 20. Oh and by the way...how the hell do u remember all these numbers??? itz freakin insane lol

My God, Bobby really was a super star, you just dont see moves like that anymore!
Goalies really must have hated seeing Bobby get the puck!
