I fully agree with you, I must admit. I am a big fan of Gordon Lightfoot; I play guitar and I know all the lyrics and chords of all his songs.
Peforming live, now and then he loses the tempo; namely on his DVD in Reno and, as I witnessed, on his performance in Waukeegan that I attended. I think this is kind of a concession to the "easy audience" which I personally do not like... but I also guess that playing same songs over and over can bring this... anyway.

One of the most underrated songwriters ever. He has written some incredible songs. Not as well known is a song called Too Late for Prayin' that I think is one of his best.

This song is about the woman that was with John Belushi when he died. She helped shoot Belushi up and was hanging out with Belushi the week of his death. I believe gordon dated her years before she met Belushi. read Bob Woodward's biography of Belushi called Wired for more info.

I went thru Labor and Delivery listening to this song. Back Labor. And I hated it at the tme, but now have fond memory's. Ended up 'section'. Never, at that time would I have been 'fond'.

In her autobiography "Chasing the Dragon" Cathy Smith credited herself with picking up the harmony during "Sundown's" refrain. On the single he did not give her credit. On subsequent versions she's credited for backup vocals.
Smith and Lightfoot were together on and off for about 10 years.Smith moved to California and had the fatal encounter with Belushi. her autobiography is a good read as is Lightfoot's bio, "If You Could Read His Mind," by Maynard Collins.

I wonder how many people remember when they first heard this song. I lived in South Carolina and it was played on every radio station, juke box and cable music channel. My daughter learned to dance in her crib to the tune of Sundown. Our downstairs neighbors played it 24 hours a day and the walls were very thin. I have such fond memories of that time.
