Mansell vs. Piquet - Silverstone 1987

Video Description:
By lap 45 the gap, between Mansell and Piquet was just over 20 seconds with Mansell lapping around 2 seconds a lap faster than Nelson. The Brazilian's tyres were shot and Nigel was moving with greater urgency. He may have been a long way down behind a driver with two world championships under his belt but that was not going to stop Nigel. By lap 53 the gap was 9.6 seconds, on lap 60 it was down to 1.6 seconds and then came lap 60 and the move of the decade.
Just 0.5 seconds split the pair as they approached Stowe. Mansell feinted left and Piquet sought to block the move. He had been sold a dummy and Nigel was already pointing to the inside. He darted through and beat Piquet by almost two seconds, sent the crowds delirious.

Mansell wasn't 'very stupid', but there's no doubt that he was less collected than other drivers. He also happened to be very unlucky; the tyre blow out in '86 was no fault of his whatsoever, and there's a strong chance he would've won in '87 had he not missed races due to a back injury.

I hope that soon we will see beautiful Races in F1 with Robert Kubica. He is very talented. I hope that in the end of his carrer everybody will try to confront him with Ayrton Senna or Nelson Piquet:)

Mansell may have won a championship but Coulthard has scored more championship points, because coulthard always brought the car home, mansell somehow didnt have that skill.

Who's the better driver Mansell or Piquet ? Well Piquet went to American indy cars and didnt do shit , Mansell went to American indy cars and won the PPG title first time out winning races on the super oval speedways.

What a ridiculous comment that is!! Mansell drove in a time when cars used to break down and just finishing some races was an achievement! Coulthard drove when cars were much more reliable hence his points haul, also Coulthard had the opportunity to get a good points total as he was in top teams from day one. Mansell may not have been the best 'driver' but he was the best 'racer' and as far as I can remember its still called Grand Prix Racing not driving. Mansell is a god....hush your noise.

Please what ? recall the fact that Mansell had the 86 title in the bag until a massive tyre blowout in Adelaide , or in 87 when leading the championship had a suspension failure at Suzuka and couldnt race the final 2 rounds only needing points finishes to win the championship. Then theres 91 and all the mechanical failures. So if not for badluck out of Mansells control he could well have 4 world titles. 2 of which went to Brazlian drivers.

I'm sorry for him, but you can't argue this way. There's NO bad luck in there. Otherwise, Piquet could have won in 1984 (when he had the fastest car by far, but unbeliaveble unreliable - poor luck?), in 1980 (just take one or other retirement and that's it), in 1990/1991 (if only Ford had delivered the long awaited V10 engine wich would lead the Bennettons to the title. All bad luck? Definetly not. All of these is part of racing. Mansell was a GREAT driver but just don't compare him to Piquet

I understand your loyalty to your fellow country man , but the simple fact is Senna was a better driver than Piquet and i watched a interview with Senna before he died were he said Mansell was the toughest competitor that he ever raced against and the only other driver he had respect for.

piquet was a great driver but u know, there was a bit of luck in all 3 of his titles - carlos reutemann blew a 17 point lead in 1981, prost threw away a 14 point advantage in 1983, and mansell scored just 7 points beside his 6 wins in 1987

well... the same way Prost got lucky in 1986, Lauda got lucky in 1984, Rosberg got lucky in 1982 and so on... Altough I don't like to rely on luckiness to crown someone a champion (yo man, all these pilots got all the credit for being champs, they won races and scored enough points to!), one can always use this excuse to 'credit' his rival the title :-)
