Your assertion is erronenous. The word "gay" was inserted especially for the movie because this song was taking place during the "day"/"today". In the original Broadway play, the verse was "happy and witty and bright" (just as in the commercial) as the song was taking place at "night". There was no change to avoid controversy. That's ridiculous. Get your facts straight.

Natalie Wood was WONDERFUL in this movie. This scene is fantastic, and the emotion she was able to deliver in the final scene of the movie was simply incredible. No other actress was ever more suited to sing a song about being pretty than she was!
