Wii Controller for Virtual Reality

Uploaded by: spelunkerucd
Video Description:
Movie showing how to hack a Wii controller to track its absolute position and orientation in space using a custom-made IR beacon.
Shows several examples of 3D graphics applications used with a Wii controller, and a virtual light saber. More information, instructions how to build a custom IR beacon, and source code at http://idav.ucdavis.edu/~okreylos/ResDev/Wiimote

Why is it than Nintendo advertised the Wii remote to be revolutionary, but they abuse it beyond comprehension! The best Wii game, Mario Galaxy, only uses it for spinning (shaking it). Why can't Nintendo, or ANY 3rd-party-developer, use the Wii remote as it was intended?!

its probably a mix of time restraints, profit margins, audience, and hardware limitations why would a company such as ea go out of their way to develop something ground breaking that uses something similar to this video in a wii game for their big name franchaises when a vast majority of the current audience is content with whats currently there

I said Nintendo, too; they can't even get it right. And no, no one is satisfied with 90% of Wii games being garbage. They just buy the few good games, and become immediately disappointed with the bad ones shortly after purchase.

i totally agree with you if only there were more publishers dedicating time, effort and resources into the wii like high voltage the people behind conduit

This demo is using the CURRENT WII REMOTE. The PC does not alter it / the controller is not hacked. Developers could make games that do this! Now! No Wii Motion Plus needed!!

He only uses special sensor bars. The Wii remote doesn't change.

Actually, no. The MotionPlus allows more accurate gesture recognition, but it will not be able to do the full tracking I show in the video. The beacon/software I'm showing here can tell exactly where the Wiimote is in relation to the beacon. Look at the lightsaber section, where the blade (drawn on the computer screen) more or less exactly follows the real Wiimote I'm holding in front of it. MotionPlus can't do that -- whether that's important for games is another question, though. :)

as far as i know the wii motion plus just boosts the bluetooth signal, making the motion detection more smooth. this would come in handy for your application as well meaning that it would be a lot smoother. it would be interesting if you could track a larger area bu making different shapes with LEDs that the application could detect. that would be a great step to try, i dont know how well it would work though.

Nope. Contains an IDG600 gyro. I'd guess there's also a microcontroller or Wiimote firmware extension in there, unless the Kalman filtering is happening in game software. And spelunkerucd, there is no reason why a full 6-DOF IMU, as the Wiimote will be with the Wiimotion Plus, can't do three-axis dead-reckoning spacial tracking. And it will be referenceless so, assuming bias compensation and proper calibration, no more sensor bar.

Spelunkerucd, I love your buckyball deformation demonstration and molecular modeler. Very cool. I'm working on something similar, though I don't have any of the tensegrity simulation done. Anyhow, kudos! :-D

either way the wiimotion plus could come in handy for this, giving it a smoother feel and more accurate tracking.

It's homegrown, a simple demo using a 3D volume model storing "density" for each point in space, and the visible surface is extracted as an isosurface or "level set" from the 3D volume. It's not fancy at all, but fun to play with.
