From the DVD: The Pathology of Privilege Racism, White Denial & the Costs of Inequality
For years, acclaimed author and speaker Tim Wise has been electrifying audiences on the college lecture circuit with his deeply personal take on whiteness and white privilege. In this spellbinding lecture, the author of White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son offers a unique, insi
de-out view of race and racism in America. Expertly overcoming the defensiveness that often surrounds these issues, Wise provides a non-confrontational explanation of white privilege and the damage it does not only to people of color, but to white people as well. This is an invaluable classroom reso
urce: an ideal introduction to the social construction of racial identities, and a critical new tool for exploring the often invoked - but seldom explained - concept of white privilege.

..(continued) racial diversity doesn't work?
The U.S. Constitution says,...all me are created equal.., well we know that's not true.
Language, economics, biology, geographic location, culture, and religion makes us different. So because of these differences we can't learn, and vibe, and respect one another. White Privledge and Affirmative Action are opposites. Yet, no White person would trade places with me. Once again, Narr
owmindedness = prejudice!!!

aldeb: I left no comments here for you. I agree that narrowmindedness is prejudicial. I have no argument with that whatsoever.
I disagree. I strongly believe we can love, learn and respect each other despite our differences. IMO, we may be different but equal. Take care...
To everyone out ... ( 1 week ago by aldeb456)
To everyone out there, is Tim Wise 100% wrong?
Is he? Is he saying anything truth at all? @ the 1:23 mark, he say's, "they were getting their clock clean by the elite" (Black Africans and poor Whites that were indentured servants). He's wrong?

I hear you jadeseaglass...it's a shame other ppl don't feel the same way.
ugh: It is true ... ( 1 week ago by lictor313)
ugh: It is true that Jefferson put into his Declaration of Independence a wild rhetorical flourish, claiming that "all men are created equal." He was not a moron, and cannot have meant anything so absurd as is sometimes supposed. What he meant was that all Englishmen should be equal before the law.
Jefferson was ... ( 1 week ago by lictor313)
Jefferson was reacting against the class structure of English society and an aristocracy, of which the greater part had been created by kings and ennobled parvenus, often for the most discreditable services, so that socially and morally worthless individuals were given special privileges because they were descended from men who had, rightly or wrongly, been elevated to the peerage.
Jefferson ... ( 1 week ago by lictor313)
Jefferson recognized, of course, the biologically inequality of all men: (quote) "There is a natural aristocracy among men. The grounds for this are virtue and talents...There is also an artificial aristocracy, founded on wealth and birth, without either virtue or talents; for *with* these, it would belong in the first class." now stop doting and feeling sorry for your inglorious race...
"getting our clock ... ( 1 week ago by lictor313)
"getting our clock cleaned by the elite" he got it correct: but in a totally wrong way: the black presence inflicted many social ills on white Americans during slavery: in many cases joblessness and super low wages were a direct consequence of having a large part of negro slaves... of course, this is precisely (contrarily to Wise's assertion) what is happening today: its called Greater Worker Insecurity: it drives wages down as the third world immigration increases.
Inglorious race?!! ... ( 1 week ago by sdrob40)
Inglorious race?!! Look Lictor, I understand WHY millions of whites with your mindset, that have done NOTHING but give your labor, choose to believe you are the "superior group" on this planet. But when that same false sense of "self-superioity" boils downs to people like you....then thats just crazy! I mean, in your world, a black neurosurgeon is still less than a white hillbilly with a 6th grade education, simply because of skin color. Tim Wise is right.
In fact as many ... ( 1 week ago by SgtZellmer)
In fact as many civil war historians even those bias against the South still tell you that post July 1861 the majority who fought did so because their families and homes were being threatened. Homes burned, wives raped etc. Before that it was still economic. However not correlating to slaves which almost none even owned. It was over the immense overtaxation like the prospect of the Morrill Tariff being passed that stood to ruin most everyone Maybe not ruin but still hurt even the rich. Wise=liar
Tim is not correct ... ( 1 week ago by SgtZellmer)
Tim is not correct on the Civil War. He says about states rights "Yes the right of the states to keep and maintain slaves"? Huh? Who was gonna take them? Sure as hell not Lincoln and the Republican party. They said so. Rich folks were the only ones that really had any in the first place. He speaks of how slavery really hurt the average white or freed black in America. He's right. Does he think he has had some break through? They knew it then. They werent tricked? Wuh huh? Ridiculous Bull Shit.
When that was put ... ( 1 week ago by SgtZellmer)
When that was put in the Declaration it didnt include blacks. People seem to forget that not only were many of our founding fathers slave owners but that at that time there was almost no notion anywhere that blacks were even human. They were enslaved in England and other parts of Europe, here in America and long before Europe and America in their native Africa. Africans had been enslaving Africans long before white men landed here. They created the market for the slave trade.

more superior... yeah okay yes ignorance is bliss: keep ignoring the obvious differences between humans... its much easier to say we're all equal isn't it... moron
I read a quote from ... ( 5 days ago by aldeb456)
I read a quote from Thomas Jefferson saying that he didn't believe Black ppl capable of the same intelligence as a White person. He also said in a letter to John Adams on August 16, 1816 (192 yrs ago today) "Bigotry is the diesease of ignorance". Jefferson, as great as he was, contracdicted himself many times (like aldeb)
On the funny side, I'm sure Jefferson didn't think all Black women were bad, just ask Sally Hemmings! lol

There's a book, 'Arguing about Slavery', by William Lee Miller which talks about the Congressional battle opposing the institution on slavery, mainly centalizing around John Quincy Adams.
"at that time there ... ( 5 days ago by madtal)
"at that time there was almost no notion anywhere that blacks were even human." I disagree with that.Although the southern upper crust was economically dependent upon the institution, there was much philosophical opposition to it even in the south. When T.Jefferson offered a proposal in 1784 that would have prohibited slavery in the AL & MS territories after 1800, it failed in the Continental Congress by a single vote. & Washington, among others, made sure that that his slaves would be freed.
Much like the ... ( 5 days ago by SgtZellmer)
Much like the Morrill Tariff in 1861. Only that time the effects were going to displace 100,000s of average non-slave holding joes in the South. The Federal government wouldnt even amend the tariff so that when passed it wouldnt be so overwhelming. Well looked at what that caused. Secession. Then they had to invade just to bring back the very people they left with no option but to leave. Wow thats real smart. NOT!
Thomas Jefferson ... ( 5 days ago by SgtZellmer)
Thomas Jefferson resigned his position because he saw the actions being taken by the Federal Government were far to similar to that of the English Monarchy they had just fought to escape. The Whiskey tax was often compared to the Stamp Act which led up to the American Revolution. Though there was no serious talk of secession plenty of people who were even un-affected by the tax saw it was BS. Jefferson wanted nothing to do with a government like that. It singled out poor working class.
Well Washington was ... ( 5 days ago by SgtZellmer)
Well Washington was still a slave owner. Why didnt he just free his anyway. Why? madtal hmm why? Either way in the 1790s Jefferson also left his seat as Secretary of State because of the Whiskey Rebellion. Washington led troops in Pennsylvania against "rebels" The overtaxation singled them out. It affected large distillers like Washington himself to but was much more harsh on the small farm operation were the effacts of the tax were grievous. It was complete discrimination by social class.

It's interesting ... ( 5 hours ago by aldeb456)
It's interesting whenever a White or Jewish person talks about 'White Privilege' or even racism, Whites call him a 'nigger lover'. Look what happened to John Brown.
Whites tell me there is no such thing as White privilege, and that Blacks have Affirmative Action and they still are failures.
4:29 Slavery undermined the wages of the typical White class working person.
When non Blacks work for less wages it makes us failures to some. Sad!
