The setting for the video is the early 1960s, actually. The young couple are dressed very Ivy League, in the style of that era. The "New Frontier" was the name for President John F. Kennedy's policy agenda, like FDR's "New Deal" and LBJ's "Great Society."

The video version omits the last verse entirely. It goes: Let's pretend that it's the real thing And stay together all night long And when I really get to know you We'll open up the doors and climb into the dawn. Confess your passion, your secret fear Prepare to meet the challenge of the new frontier. Maybe that verse was cut for time -- even without it, the video runs close to 5 minutes -- or maybe it just didn't work with the concept.

i looked at the liner notes of the nightfly cd and all i remember seeing was that Larry Carlton played on all tracks. I will check to make sure this is correct.

Actually I think you're right, after checking myself. Carlton did all guitar solo work, except Rick Derringer did one of the solos on the album (this is definitely not Derringer on this song.) Hugh McCracken and Dean Parks, the usual Steely Dan rhythm guitarists, also played on the album.

Hey, thanks for sharing this one, Chris! Yes, love the video! I believe this song is the starting point to DF's trilogy... Nightfly, Kamikiriad, and Morph the Cat. One can't ever go wrong with ANY of those gems!!! Some really good comments posted here about the great musicians involved in making this timeless classic!

John Kennedy coined the phrase "New Frontier." In the 1960 campaign, he spoke of moving aggressively into the new decade, for "the New Frontier is here whether we seek it or not." I wonder if he ever made-out in a bomb shelter?

My opinion is that Becker adds the acidic cynicism. Example being that this tune is essentially hopeful in that there would be something after WW3
