I wish I knew that in 1979, I spent long hours wondering whether I agreed with the message or not (was "noble law" meant to be ironic? who are the oaks and the maples?) and I now I find there wasn't really a message at all! Great. It rocks. It always did. It rocks more now I don't have to worry about whether I agree with it.

Neil Peart is and ... ( 5 days ago by Jakomancer)
Neil Peart is and was a libertarian, and this song is quite likely an irony aimed at people who promote collectivist ideas. The line "hatchet, axe, and saw" expresses the opinion that when equality is the goal of a society, it only ends up reducing everyone to the lowest level. I like the song, but I'm not sure I agree with it's politics.

The genius of this band is that no matter how old the song is, it's always is socially significant. Is it me or did they do this live here? Doesn't sound like any album version to me. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Has anyone ever wondered what Neil does with all his old kits? LOL! Man, those Ludwigs would be worth a shiteload today! True musical Genius! Great find scorpo!

I'm not sure if he's a libertarian, but Wikipedia says he is, he was definitely influenced by Ayn Rand, and his lyrics definitely show libertarian themes. It is very unlikely that he would write a different song with such drastically contradictory views without any form of irony or satire.
