He surely didn't speak those exact words. Apart from the fact that he spoke Aramaic and not English, The King James version (Luke) has it as "Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done." So it depends on the translation. But I accept you have a point. However, deducing that the song is "about" Christ is like thinking "Hallelujah" is about King David. At most it's a metaphor.

Is it just me or is there nothing remotely comforting in the idea that bad things don't just happen but are visited on us deliberately by a higher power? I'm quite happy with the idea of Fate and the acceptance that certain things are out of our control, but this god who does bad things to good people seems a bit alarming to me. You could only worship such a god out of fear, surely?

True -- I didn't really mean it was "about" Jesus, just that he was definitely using the words and ideas of Christ to communicate his own feelings at the time he wrote the song.
However you interpret it -- it's truly an amazingly beautiful song!

OK. The teleological bent of your comment threw me for a moment. I don't think disasters have a purpose. There is no "why" and the people who cope best with adversity seem to me to be the ones who realise that. To that extent, acceptance is vital, and since that takes us neatly back to Cohen's beautiful song, I think I'll close here. Best wishes.

Wow, what a performance of a real "prayer" of a song. Don't quite understand all of the bickering going on in the comments. Jeez. Weird watermelon dude at the end. That aside, this is obviously the cut of this song that made it onto "Cohen Live" (released in 1994?) - one of my favourite CDs - and it's great to actually see it played live. Hooray for YouTube! This track and Sisters of Mercy are outstanding songs on this live album.
