This is actually a hard song to sing! There is a version of Jimmy singing MacArthur park and he's perfect. maybe he had an off day with his voice on this show date.

I love this beautiful song. Last night I heard James Taylor perform this as only he can at the Mann Music Center in Philly. It was sp exquisitely performed by James and his Band of Legends it brought tears to my eyes. I so hope he records it so we can all enjoy it for "all time"

This man is a genius. Milestoneexpress, thanks so much for posting this. I have never gotten to hear Jimmy doing this song himself. I would like to dedicate my version of this song to this video in particular.

Thanks for the post, miles, negative commentary & all. Have you ever heard Burt Bacharach do "his" stuff? I think the composer should be cut some slack - he may have heard Glen, in this case, in his head as he wrote it.

When you take a great Jimmy Webb song and puts Glen Campbells' great voice to it, the result is a masterpiece. While Glen can outsing Jimmy any day, Webb still does a nice job with this great song that he wrote..

It's usually good to hear the writer perform his or her own material. I have to admit that the vocals here are embarrassing: he simply does not have the voice for this material.
The last 7-8 measures of this performance sound like Laura Nyro's piano playing. Other piano parts here sound like his song MacArthur Park -- perhaps too schmaltzy compared to the utter finesse of the vocals & arrangement of the Glen Campbell version.
Still, one of the greatest songs written in popular music.

i love it when i can hear the writer do his own stuff, and in webb's case, this stuff is MAGIC. we're all used to the published versions, but i always like to hear how the writer sings it...it was his/her song, after all.

I find it amusing that some found my comments blasphemous. Perhaps, I need to ask for forgiveness to those who feel insulted.
Look, this guy is a pop song-writing genius. But not all songwriters perform their material well. That shouldn't startle people, but apparently it does.

P.S. Bert Bachrach also proves the point about songwriters not suited to perform their own material. Like Webb, he struggles to hit the notes. That's why he always had very capable singers fronting his material.
Webb simply cannot hit the notes. If this wasn't Jimmy Webb - let's say it was your neighbor singing, instead - you'd be cringing. When, in reality, it's really not that difficult to recognize vocal ability, I wonder why people are falling off their chairs about this performance.

The recorded version of this Webb did for I think Ten Easy Pieces is much nicer. Although an ailing Johnny Cash did well on it. I think people can have off days.
