SelectPlusBush Gives Hazy Outlook at G8 SummitBush Gives Hazy Outlook at G8 SummitThe Associated PressThe world's top industrialized nations begin their annual summit Monday confronted with demands they reinvigorate the world economy, push ahead languishing climate change talks and make good on pledges to battle poverty and hunger. (July 6)[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] ((Helo landing, beaty shots, etc., at least one reflecting hazy view)) For his last G8 summit, President Bush came to the mountaintop -- a hot springs resort overlooking a volcanic lake on Japan's northernmost island, Hokkaido. It's a spectacular setting for a meeting the Japanese hope will strike a blow at global warming. But like the hazy view here, THAT is far from clear. BUSH SOT: (approx 16:00 from start) We're working -- working to see if we can come up with a constructive statement. ((Fukuda, then pollution file)) Japan's prime minister Fukuda wants G8 countries and big polluters like China and India to pledge a 50 percent cut in heat-trapping pollution by mid-century. ((Demos in Sapporo FONT the dateline)) Japense protesters think that's the LEAST they can do. THESE think it's time the leaders did more than just talk. ((Security)) Of course the protesters have been kept well away from the summit by thousands of police and troops. ((Newser walkin)) Meantime, at a pre-summit news conference, the president was defending a decision he's made about NEXT month's travel... ((Beijing file footage)) ... to attend the opening ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics. ((Back to bush)) Bush says he's goin to cheer on Team USA -- and NOT to offend his hosts. BUSH SOT: (approx 26:00 from start) I happen to believe not going to the opening games, the opening ceremony for the games would be an affront to the Chinese people. ((More Beijing file footage) And that, Bush says, would make it harder to talk to Chinese LEADERS about the very human rights HE wants to promote. ((Other leaders arriving? Brown? Sarkozy? whoever?)) Other world leaders have threatened to boycott the opening over that and the continuing crackdown in Tibet. But Fukuda says HE'S decided to do as Bush is doing -- and take part. First of all the water powered car technology excited more than 3 decades now if this techonolgy went to mass production the world we live today would be much more better. This technology fist was invented in the Philippines by engineer Daniel Dingel (seach it on youtube you'll find him) during the ruling Marcos but under the IMF and World Bank agreement the philippines a 3rd wold country can not produce anything that will compete products from the developed countries such as US...

Can someone explain ... ( 3 months ago by CULAVE)
Can someone explain why Brazil and India aren't in the G8- they both have larger economies than Italy and arguably more stable governments. I personally think it should be a G15 or G20

In response to my own question, perhaps its because India and Brazil have much lower per capita GDPs than Italy?

probably because ... ( 3 months ago by cromespyder)
probably because the reason their economies are bigger than italy is because of population size. india is extremely poor, brazil is not as poor but still very poor.

cromespyder- Yes, I think your'e right- there is a much bigger wealth-poverty gap in India and Brazil. China is also not in and I think thats based on their internal human rights record. So strictly speaking, size of economy is not the only factor. Thanks for the reply.

Emissions cuts will happen anyway because of peak oil.
Not really because ... ( 3 months ago by 7789902)
Not really because OPEC will lower the prices rather than go out of business. Even while the developed world switches to hydrogen and electric, 2 billion people in China and India will have affordable oil to drive around in. They will continue to pollute the world with their filthy factories but do it more dirty. Our jobs will be shipped there because the elite only live for themselves in the here and now rather than for future generations. OPEC wants to sell what they have.
Because countries ... ( 3 months ago by 7789902)
Because countries like India & China are 3rd world nations that are SUB-CONTRACTORS to the West. They are good at providing cheap labour at near slave-wages. So, when the west decides to find some other 3rd world nation to build their toys, China & India will simply become 100% irrelevent again. They are not innovators...everything coming out of China & India can easily be built here but more expensively. We need them to stay poor and not get innovative or wealthy.

It's likely that by 2050 peak oil would have occurred. Emissions of CO2 as measured by millions of metric tons per year must go down because the rate at which oil will be pumped will have decreased. This will be true even if oil is expensive enough to support drilling rigs in 20000ft of water and cost $10 billion dollars each.

as far as china, im pretty sure the g8 is for the major industrialised democracies, which china isnt(a democracy). they are also very poor too.

cromespyder- true, ive heard of something called the BRIC countries- Brazil, Russia, India and China. Its interesting though that China IS on the UN Security Council along with Russia, France, the US and UK- all those states are also in the nuclear club, so would that be an indication of the five nations running the world? If there was to be a G20 summit I would say the following countries should be added (noting overall significance, not just size of economy); China, Spain, Mexico, India, cont.

There needs to be an inclusion of other states. Spain for one, which has a great economy and good human rights records. It has been fighting Canada for the number eight spot of most industrialized nation in the world and I think Spain should be included.
