Am I the only one who is sick of the whole "redneck" craze? Am I the only one who remembers when being a redneck was something to be ashamed of? This song is arrogant junk. I live in New York, but I think that California is pretty cool. I've never been there, but I have seen lots of movies set there, and a lot of my favorite musicians come from there. California, now and forever! A Valley Girl can beat a Redneck Woman any day of the week!

Let me clarify. I didn't mean it in a physical way. I meant it on the level that I think that humbleness is good. While I'm no fan of Paris Hilton (who was born in New York by the way), I've never heard her boasting about herself. Compare that to Gretchen Wilson's "I'm a redneck and proud of it, ya'll" talk and I think that the girls that Wilson is talking about are more humble than she gives them credit for.

I also think the lyrics are contradictory. She says it's okay for everybody to be themselves, but then she talks about annoyance with Paris Hilton and her contemporaries. Aren't they just being themselves also? And who's to say that "California Girls" don't eat fried chicken or know who George Jones is? . Gretchen Wilson and the whole MuzikMafia crew (What country music collective spells their name that way, anyway?) are pretentious. Wow, I never thought I would be defending Paris Hilton!

Maybe or maybe not...It isn't as cut and dry as that. There are plenty of women living paycheck to paycheck who aren't living with their parents and having kids with different people. At my job, I know plenty of people who have stable lives and families, and who are doing pretty well for themselves considering their financial issues. Nothing is black and white, but Wilson's song does portray a group of women in a bad light, and that's pretty egotistical. No one person is above another.
