you are probably talking about the two most refined colorists in 20th century pianism. other performances pale in comparison with michelangeli's gaspard and gieseking's debussy preludes are frightening in their pianistic color and pedaling. no pianist should miss these performances.

Perhaps you should listen to Sviatoslav Richter playing Miroirs. It's here on YouTube.

Lisitsa bombed Scarbo on YT. She's wonderful at Thalberg but this just isn't her cup of tea. This comment is coming from a fan of hers too. I just heard her live last month and she was wonderful at Totentanz and La Campanella, but her Traumerei just wasn't right.

I'd actually be fairly critical of this performance. The foreground/background transitions sounded a bit artificial, as did the melodic lines. The climax was messy, the dynamic management unpoised and the ending too loud. Nonetheless, the tempo was perfect (too fast and the melody is missed, too slow and the shimmer isn't conveyed). An average performance of one of my favorite pieces.

having been fortunate to receive and watch masterclasses by dear Vlado. His intensely singtone and avoidance of any superficial actions, which he hated, comes across here nicely. ravel told him he does not like his music played with sentiment.

he studied with Maurice Ravel for 6 months in 1927. I love the man, but you are exaggerating the extent to which he worked with the composer.

Sorry if I was late in answering...anyway Gaspard means "ghost"... there is a lake you're in front of and a ghost is trying to convince you to continue your voyage in its depths

No:
"Gaspard" is actually a french adaptation of an Arabic word. Properly translated, the tite of the suite would be: The Treasurer of the Night.

I think you'll find that's more a problem of the overly harsh recorded sound. Live it was beautifully balanced. But very naturally so, it was as if the composer were speaking directly through the pianist.. a case of less being more.

To those of you arguing over what "gaspard" means, you should know that "Gaspard de la Nuit" was originally a book of poems by some French guy called Aloysius Bertrand.
Here's a quotation from Wikipedia: "The name Gaspard is derived from its original Persian form, denoting the man in charge of the royal treasures: "Gaspard of the Night or the treasurer of the night thus creates allusions to someone in charge of all that is jewel-like, dark, mysterious, perhaps e
ven morose"

Ondine is some kind of water spirit:
Wikipedia says:
"Ondine is an oneiric tale of a water fairy singing to seduce the observer and accompany her to visit her kingdom deep at the bottom of the lake in the triangle of water, fire and earth. It is reminiscent of the tinkling of the water in a stream, woven with cascades. This movement was intended to describe the water sprite in Aloysius Bertrand's poem, attempting to lure men into her domain."

A good book based on interviews with Perlemuter is "Ravel according to Ravel", in which Perlemuter explains what Ravel told him about his works whilst teaching him.

perlemuter is for many one of the great pianists of the 20th century. this live performance seems so timeless, and the overall form, so perfect. thanks for posting it.
