The Makah certainly do not want the whales to become extinct and they do not want thier culture to become extinct either.
The simple fact is the gov't should have absolutly no right to say anything about aboriginal rights. Aboriginal people in the country are SOVREIGN NATIONS seperate from america.

It doesnt matter who caused the problem, the point is it IS a problem. So that means ALL killing/Culling has too stop. Forget about countries, governments, tradition etc... And just accpet the fact that due to all cultures culling whales in the past they are now at an all time low. So it HAS to stop. ALL cultures have to stop - no exceptions.

I cannot forget about gov't or culture. It is not the place of non-aboriginal people to have any say in the matter of aboriginal harvesting rights those rights pre-date america by 1000's of years. I do however agree if you hunt it you use it.

There's an entire suborder of animals on the brink of extinction. WHO CARES about an unessessary tradition. The Makah do not need to hunt whales now. Yes, centuries ago it was imperative that they did so, but now it is not needed at all. They're exacerbating the collapse of the whales and they need to be stopped.

First of all, I never even said that I was a "euro-american". And your native culture DOES NOT have to become extinct, you just have to stop the unessessary hunting of whales. And I said that you guys are exacerbating the whale problem, which means that you are making it worse. Yeah, I know you didn't cause it, but that doesn't mean you're allowed to make it worse.

Hm, I don't know about that one guy's comment about how it's more cruel than dog fighting. I think they're about the same. I mean, in whaling you yourself are putting the animal through a long, drawn out and painful death. In dog fighting, you're making two dogs put each other through pain until one of them is dead...so idk, I think they're both pretty bad...

For thousands of years you have lived in balance with the grays - they did this to the plains indians with the buffalo - do not let them strip you of your ways. Hunt in secrecy. Use stealth. God has given your tribe a unique milleniums old relationship with the whale - like us in Alaska - it is our food source, it is our spirit and the life of our people - you are coastal tribal whalers that maintained traditions CENTURIES before western contact - You honored the first whale by feeding it to so many tribes, your tribe's tradition. Part indian? You either are or you arent... thats a lifestyle not a blood quantum - thats like saying Im part Christian... you have no place to speak... This is their life, their heritage and you all have no part in it. They will continue to go whaling with or without your approval. This happened with the plains indians and the buffalo, thats how these poeple want the Indian to conform to their values and diet. KEEP ON WHALING MAKAH!
