She deserved an oscar for this scene but, after all, Lynch didn't won anything for this movie too. The Oscars are cool, but I can't believe that pictures like "Shakespeare in love" had win a lot of oscars and people like Lynch or Kubrick nothing. It's meaningless.

i always thought that this scene was a part of her dream, and the part she was reading actually revealed a repressed memory of abuse from her life, which would in a psychological way explain why it's revealed that she's a psychopath in the end.

I love it how the director tells the leading man not to rush the line 'before what', and then in the audition scene he gets so carried away that when he says it's really delayed.

This is a cruel and brutal movie to watch. It is disturbing and distressing. This is also one of the best movies I have seen. Reminds me a little of Lars Von Trier's movies.

Are there any film students out there who could possibly tell me if what the director of this film is trying to say by contrasting this scene of extreme realism with the heightened, almost artificial quality of much of the rest of the film's acting? And Naomi Watts is wonderful.
