Most of you don't understand what Joel is singing about. If you never held a person dying in your arms or done CPR and felt the ribs break, then you don't understand. It's about brotherhood and giving your life for a person, friend or not. My son USMC was in a situation in Bagdad and all he said was "I was ready to shot (kill) everyone of us in the humvee if I had to." He knows about the elephant and he's home now. If you've never said "Good-Bye, to someone dying, The shut up" I've have!

Its one of the best songs and videos Billy Joel has ever done. It's a wonderful tribute to great men, who deserved to be honored for what they did.
as for the questions, no Billy Joel is not the blond (or any of the other men) in the Vietnam photos. He was in college and never went. He did have friends that went, many of whom, died over there.

my dad had a Billy Joel - Greatest Hits tape which I used to love listening to when I was very young. it was THIS song which I loved most, in fact the tape warped during the middle of it due to the repeated listenings it got. I can remember transcribing the lyrics, I would've been younger than 10, I didn't 'hear' Bob Hope or Doors correctly (no idea who they were back then) but I got most of the rest. This really is a great song, and seeing this performance makes me appreciate it more. thanks...

how can you say most people don't know what billy joel is singing about about? are you psychic? do you have to be a vet to feel remorse or loss? that was a very insensitive remark which you did not think out. we've all experienced loss, and you don't have a patent to that claim. and so what if someone has not experienced loss? do they have to in order to understand this song? jeesh, your reasoning fouled out.

Vietnam was an unfortunate situation for military personnel. Vets are obviously patriotic and Americans owe a huge debt for their sacrifices but they were needlessly put in harm's way for irrational political decision-making. Iraq War veterans may view fighting for Dubyas false proclamations of WMDs and Al Qaeda-Saddam connections in the same light. Unnecessary circumstances. The dogs of war should only be used in the most dire of circumstances.

I give Joel a lot of credit for writing this song.He was approached by vets who asked him if he would honor them by writing a powerful piece of their service in Southeast Asia.Initially he hesitated,but finally agreed.and we have this classic.

tessler, dogging others out for not sharing your opinion is childish. and your use of profanity demonstrates your immaturity. adv68 chose to ridicule and degrade those who did not share his opinion. that's childish. this song can mean different things to different people. let them enjoy the song for what it means to them. lastly, "INSENSITVE cuz he knows what you don't know about it"? was this song not written by a guy who WAS NOT THERE? maybe BJ should write songs about pianos.

You didn't have to BE in the war to be TOUCHED by the war. Every person in this country who lived during the Vietnam War was impacted by it in one way or another, so it's unfair to imply BJ is unqualified to write about it just because he wasn't there.
