Regardless of all the hapless banter on this one it was in fact James Burton who cut the lead which was used. Nesmith chose the final dub over West coast studio guitarist Kite Felton who he felt to scratchy.

james burton.....did this lead? It almost does not sound good enough to be him....possibly there is some recording distortion or deterioration. I am not saying you are wrong....it just does not sound that clear and tight like "hello Mary Lou"

James did it using a Vox and a chorus pedal which he usually ran through a Fender tweed set-up. Nesmith wanted a bit more twang.
