The Soviets believed that if they responded with a military crackdown to protests and civil disobedience in Eastern Europe especially Poland they would face insurgencies like in Afghanistan and simply arouse more discontent at home. The Soviet Union was essentially a leaking bucket. As long as the tap is running you can ignore the problem but once the tap is switched off you are completely helpless.

You have to take sides and decide which is the lesser of two evils. Supporting the mujihadeen during the 1980's was the right thing to do at the time. Defeating the Taliban and Al-Qaeda is the right thing to do today.
