The blend of ... ( 2 months ago by BasilRiverdale)
The blend of historian and poet is a rare combination, and Al did it (does it) better than anyone. I should be careful with my use of tense; Al certainly was. He sings in and of past, present and future. In 2008, men in their early fifties look to the past and wonder "where did the time go?" It just . . . goes. I think Al understood that early on. Rare genius.

...One of the greatest songwriters of our time...and a HELL of NICE GUY.
My brother Steve and I saw him (by himself) about 3 years ago in a small, old converted movie house...with about 25 other people in York, South Carolina (no shit). AL STEWART in York, SC. After the gig. I told him that I was one of those "half familiar faces in the 2nd row, ghostlike with the f
ootlights in their eyes"...and that I had waited 25 years to see him play. He signeda CD for my wife. A real gentleman.

So glad to hear this. I'm 42, and was gifted with Al Stewart by a roommate who was ten or so years older. I've been introducing the music of the '70's to a much younger lady friend online for a few years now, and it's really cool to see her appreciate and be moved by the quality music that she otherwise wouldn't have been exposed to. Many kudos for your voluntary inquisition into the graet songs of this era.

Yes, I'm 56 and remember this tune very well.....listening to it out on the lake up in northern Minnesota under a blue light sky and relaxing under the warm bit sun. Al's concert versions I have to believe are just as good as his studio versions since the sound back than was unbelievable for a tune from the late 70's.

This was one of my favorite songs. I had a great teacher who played this in her detention class. She thought we were being tortured by the song and yet it is my favorite memory of that teacher. Also this song is still as relevant as it was then. What a great teacher to open my eyes to Al Stewart and Jackson Browne.

I'm 53, and let me tell ya, music was pretty lame when On the Border came out. What a refreshing breath of fresh air Al Stewart's music was. Time Passages is another of his masterpieces. Love you always Al:) Lance in beautiful Bremerton, Washington

OK, not quite sure why everyone's divulging their age, but in the spirit of transparency I'm 49. I went on my first date in the spring of 1977, taking my paramour to the Al Stewart concert at the Lyric Theater in Baltimore. I remember it quite well, the anticipation of it only heightened by the fact that it had been postponed a couple of months because Al had lost his voice while touring the US that winter. Thanks for posting this, thanks the memories Al, and thanks Suzanne wherever you are.
