I have never heard or heard of this man untill I found him on youtube. His playing is so rich and colorful, best interpretations of these 3 pieces I have ever heard.

According to Wikipedia: the observer wonders at the scene he's witnessing. "It is a bell tinting at the walls of a city under the horizon and the carcass of a hanged man reddened by the setting sun"

I disagree with you ... ( 1 year ago by thatsmypeanuts)
I disagree with you. I would consider that note an ostinato. I am fairly confident that sampling is literally putting a sample of another piece-usually prerecorded-into an original piece. But I do agree that his use of that note is superb.

this piece is based on the prose poem "le gibet" by aloyssus bertrand (interestingly, this piece was also featured in the film "the hunger" - an '80s vampire flick). all of gaspard was based on bertrand's book of poems, gaspard de la nuit. look for it!!

You mean the Bb played over and over? If so, that's the church bell chiming
I allways imagined ... ( 9 months ago by PrinsTan)
I allways imagined it was the body... anyway its based on the poem "Le Gibet" from Aloysius Bertrand. The last paragraph says (after asking severall times what the B (Bb)was):
"C'est la cloche qui tinte aux murs d'une ville sous l'horizon, et la carcasse d'un pendu qui rougit le soleil couchant"
(It is the tinting bell at the walls of a city under the horizon, and the carcass of a hanged man reddened by the setting sun)

Le Gibet
(Que vois-je remuer autour de ce Gibet?
Faust.)

Aloyssus Bertrand

How hard is this piece? Is it harder than Jeux d'eau? I would really like to learn this one and I attempted (and failed at) Jeux d'eau

I'm a pretty good amateur pianist and I can tell you that this piece is quite hard, even though it's the easiest mvmt of Gaspard in terms of hitting the notes. But the shading, the nuance - very subtle. And even hitting the notes is quite tough - the very soft chordal passages in particular. But Jeux d'eau is harder. Also, let's not be too literal about the Bb/A#. It could be the bell, could be the body swaying in the breeze, but there is no 1-to-1 translation from the poem.
Also, what an ... ( 8 months ago by jeffg2020)
Also, what an extraordinary interpretation. He actually does what Ravel says: do not speed up or slow down. He sticks to this throughout, which is not so easy. I love Argerich, but she throws in a lot of tempo changes in this mvmt.

elevator to the gallows. (if memory serves) it was the first movie by louis malle, real title then, Ascenseur pour l'

when Vlado fled ... ( 5 months ago by chad410)
when Vlado fled Poland from the germans he had cluching in his hands a copy of the Beethoven sonatas, and lost an eye on the sharp fence. He has something always meaningful to sing not meaningless and superficial. This is quite fitting I think. It must have been so terrifying for him. he gets sounds from this movement I ve never heard anybody else produce. I can feel the terror in the bells
