this kind of ultra-bold statement is pure nonsense. Corea has been playing this piece for the last 30 years and Uehara tries to be his clone here and there...Broaden your knowledge of music and stop making such nonsensical comments.

i politely disagree -- corea himself said that he hated how a lot of people only knew that song and always associated him with it. when he played solo concerts he always avoided playing it. and hiromi isn't trying to be his clone, she's trying to communicate musically. this was mostly improvised.

I am talking about ... ( 1 week ago by Justino111)
I am talking about styles here. Alright, she is young, very talented, and is playing with one of the most recognizable styles in the history of jazz piano. Now, when she does the melodies with both hands three/four octaves together, that's totally Chick Corea. All the appogiaturas, that's all Corea, even her articulation becomes an emulation of Corea's and that's annoying...

i disagree as well, justino--of course there are aspects of chick's playing that are going to make their way into hiromi's, more so certainly than vice versa since he's one of the fathers of this style of music and she is, like you said, still pretty young. but firstly, there has to be some stylistic cohesion between the two of them for the piece to make sense; and secondly, i think you might be hearing a lot of call-and-answer, which is executed flawlessly. hiromi's got her own style.
mxdblessing: good ... ( 1 week ago by Justino111)
mxdblessing: good comment. No, I didn't refer to the call/answer thing. That's part of the dialogue, although I must say I don't like the way she does that either. Now, trying to move the discussion a bit, there is a video of Corea and Rubalcaba playing at Blue Note. Rubalcaba has indeed a style which is obviously influenced by his background. And even when he plays with Corea, it's difficult to match the Corea/Hancock duos. It's about something else, a deeper level of individual expression.
justino: well she's ... ( 1 week ago by mxdblessing)
justino: well she's certainly no herbie hancock. not yet, at least. and i'll be the first to admit that i like her much more in her trio than in any other setting, and then in particular when she's playing serious, hard-drinkin, high-energy fusion.
no question about ... ( 1 week ago by Justino111)
no question about the high-energy of her playing, especially the trio, you're right. I was listening to more of her stuff. It's undeniable that she has superb musicianship. The first pianist I learned to admire was Monk. Then it came Bill Evans. It's a mistake of mine, I know, but whenever I listen to jazz pianists, I somehow keep looking for that kind of depth one feels when listening to those two masters. But yes, Uehara has a long and successful career ahead of her.

@Ursulocrow-Pardon me but...I don't know why do you make sexualize comment like that? Will you be saying it if Hiromi happens to be a guy name Hiroshi or what if he was white? Don't get me wrong this is no way disrespecting your opinion though but...

septemberpuppy pardon me, I can't really get your point. what i was saying is just that i don't care if Hiromi plays similar progressions as Corea, I just loved this play. With erotical I mean that they get into each other in a sublime way, They had fun, they shared, they felt. And i felt it too, I loved it. =)
