Where the ladder down is, you can jump down safely if you go at the same time (or are alone). When the shadow clones disappear, jump in the air and they can't possess you while you are in the air. The final boss is weak to normal kicks - face away from him and just keep kicking, and he'll walk right into your foot a lot. The background changes when he can no longer keep up his illusion. Notice he doesn't disappear anymore also. lol, never play it again? But it's one of my fave beat-em-ups.
