This would only be cool for show cars. Side impact crashes. I could see someone accidently hitting the button for this and the door opens and well. You get the picture. As someone stated before if you lose power then what? your trapped in your own car. This could happen as easy as the alternator takin a shit on ya.

I don't like it. Too many "what-if's" to worry about. The most talked about on here seems to be "what if the doors lose power to them from an accident, you're fucked!"
Seriously not worth the 'futuristic' feel, if you ask me.

All the above shortcomings could easily be addressed.
Door mal-function/power failure. Mechanical override allows door to open anyway.
Side-impact. Why would this be any less crash-worthy?
Accidental opening when moving. Easily handled. That's no more a concern than with current door types.
Interesting idea. It's an improvement in many ways.

Many regular car doors won't open in an accident anyway. Quite often the fire-crews need to use (what we in the UK call the Jaws of Life) to cut away the roof in order to free trapped patients from a crashed vehicle.
If your car falls into a river, you are going to have trouble opening the door until the car is completely full of water.
I agree that there should be some kind of "manual release" but I do like the design.

I used to work in automotive design and I think this is a very interesting idea. I am sure a solution to adequate performance in a side impact could be found, the up and down support from the middle strut is not as important as you might think. Also mechanical override could easily fixed power loss issues. Only one that would suck is denting (of door or side tracks) making it hard to open close door. I like it.
