Inspired from others. They have a range of influences including Metallica and Iron Maiden. Those two bands don't sound the same and BFMV doesn't sound like anyone of their influences but a kinda mix. Because their influences are basically all Metal and SOADs influences are from a range of Music genres that why they sound so different and unique. Look up Frank Zappa or Captain BeefHeart, Serj Tankian says SOAD are huge fans of both and see if you notice similarities in lyrical content =]
