That's funny because i bought a slide about six months ago or so and i haven't listened many slide guitarists... so i reckon this is a good place to start and get my inspiration on the slide guitar thing.

A very very good place to start. Derek isn't like some other slide guitarists, because he rarely uses a pick-he's fingerstyle, mostly. But his tone is supreme. I've met (and been backstage with) Derek several times-he's also a really cool guy, and his chill-ness is part of what makes his tone so smooth.

He may be a good place to get inspiration from, but I wouldn't suggest starting out trying to play like him. The slide is a hard thing to get used to. I've been working at if for a couple years now and still am having a really hard time getting used to it.

i HATE it when people say derek doesn't play with emotion because his face and body don't show much. you should be determining that by the sounds coming from his guitar! he cares more about the music coming from his guitar than the emotions showing from his face.

Oh, I HEAR tremendous emotion in his playing, like I do in the playing of Eric Clapton--another musician whose emotion is vested entirely in his playing, not body movement. Derek has emerged as one of the great, distinctive voices of slide guitar, adding his own unique quality that is quite recognizable as his playing--apart from others.

i saw him once when mike mattison had larinjitus. No disrespect to him but when they played this without him it was one of the greatest jams i have ever heard. Up there with dark star and mountain jam.

There are plenty of players who show tons of emotion in their face, but their playing is practically dead. Body language means nothing. Derek is the most soulful player I know.
