To play with the likes of Bill Evans, he'd have to be. A combo without a bass is like a skeleton without flesh.

What does "pwn" mean? What does anything you said mean? I think you're just a musical parasite. You offer opinions on things you know nothing about.Shut the hell up.

Who are you talking to?
How about people ... ( 3 weeks ago by baileal)
How about people like Louis Armstrong or any other great horn players. I agree about jazz guitarist, pianist, and bass players thought.
I was talking about ... ( 3 weeks ago by minor7b5b9)
I was talking about instruments used in the rhythm section. Louis was not a well-schooled musician. He played mostly by ear, and his pop[ularity came more from his personality than his musicianship. I do not say this in a critical manner. His contribution to jazz was humongous. Dizzy Gillespie was the theorist behind the bebop movement, even though Bird got most of the credit.

This is completely ... ( 3 weeks ago by oklahomma)
This is completely false. I'm sure you know this, but all the pros hear the music, not tell them selves to play a whole tone scale over a 7b5 chord. Modern horn players know just as much theory, as they all play piano as well. And people like Dave Liebman (sax) know the limits of theory and change chords on the rhythm section without the rhythm section even knowing. You can't say that horn players just "play the changes" what is that supposed to mean?
I can only speak ... ( 3 weeks ago by minor7b5b9)
I can only speak from my own experience as a jazz guitarist who has played for many years in many countries of the world. Yes, there are many horn players who know their theory inside out & backwards, but on the whole I would have to go with the rhythm sections.I do agree with you that younger players coming up are much better schooled in jazz theory, & that makes me very happy.
Well, the new ... ( 3 weeks ago by oklahomma)
Well, the new generation of jazz musicians is here, youngsters with theory knowledge of pros, technique of pros, and best of all, a respect for classical music. Formerly, bickering between jazzers and classical musicians was non-stop. Currently, more and more pay tribute to both classical and jazz, realizing that one helps the other.
I was never aware ... ( 3 weeks ago by minor7b5b9)
I was never aware of the bickering between jazz & classical musicians. As a youngster I had equal exposure to both genres, & loved both, & still do. Although I am a jazz musician, my extensive collection of jazz & classical music is about equal. When I hear Isaac Stern doing Mendelsohn's Violin Concerto in E minor, or Sarasate's "Zieguenerwiesen" or Robert Marcellus playing Mozart's Clarinet Concerto, I am not ashamed to say that tears run down my cheeks.Thank you for your remarks.

"That is misleading.
Do they just make stuff up? No.
They study - formally or informally. He is repeating old ideas, referenceing someone else ideas, putting things in a new context. He is making things up no more than you are making up a new language everytime you speak." Language isn't art. You are using hours of practice and hopefully a thoroug
h knowledge of theory. Obviously improvisition is not just "making shit up", but the whole point is you are constructing musical ideas onpoint
