Great video very good, but I'm curious how is it possible that the selector lever is on middle pozition but the locomotive still has the traction power. Shouldn't teh selector lever be in forward pozition for power and in back position for dinamic brake?

General Motors Electro Motive Division manufactured the locomotives seen in this video (DC class). From what I've seen, New Zealand doesn't use cabooses. Sorry =)

The lever is only for throttle operation, notches 1 - 8, unless of course you are talking about the reverser level (for forwards and backwards operation). Train brake, and the dynamic brake (if fitted) are entirely different controls (if memory serves me right :) )

That lever on some version's of the "EMD" style selector will stay in the middle. You toggle it forward or back for throttle and dynamic, but then return it to center once the desired mode has been selected. On some older diesel's with manual transistion, you selected series/parallel/series-parallel configuration of the traction motors with this lever as well.
