It sometimes is a natural motion in the free hand (or both hands if conducting choral pieces) to sort of make a 'rock on' gesture with the hand...has something to do with the tendons being used and all of that but I catch myself doing it quite a bit and our choral director at where I go to school also does it quite often. So I'm no longer surprised by gang signs or any other weird hand gesture lol.
