Bill Gates Unplugged

Uploaded by: carnegiemellonu
Video Description:
Carnegie Mellon was the final stop on Microsoft Corp. founder Bill Gates' recent tour of several nationally recognized universities.
As founder, chairman and former CEO of Microsoft, Gates revolutionized personal computing in the digital information age. His talk at Carnegie Mellon concluded his farewell lecture tour as he transitions from Microsoft into his new role in the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, whose mission it is to bring innovations in health and learning to the global community.
Microsoft is one of the university's top corporate supporters, partnering with Carnegie Mellon in many ways. More than 300 university alumni currently work at Microsoft offices around the globe. Carnegie Mellon is also home to the Microsoft Research-sponsored Center for Computational Thinking, launched in March 2007 in an effort to stimulate collaborative research and educational partnerships. With a lead gift of $20 million, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has made possible the Gates Center, one of two groundbreaking buildings that will create Carnegie Mellon's new School of Computer Science Complex.

Yeah, it'd be good if they were actually going to see it as well. It's too bad we can't take care of our planet well enough to guarantee a long term future.

That's a real defeatist mentality... We could be doing a lot worse things to our planet. And the planet is a lot harder to disrupt than you are trying to say. By the time we do destroy its system, we'll have made precautions that would let us live in it or reverse it. Our species dying won't happen as result of not wishing to live -- which would be the case if we died from pollution. We are more able than you think; and more scared of death.

If there is one thing I've learned from my stint on YouTube, it's that talking to GW proponents is like talking to evangelicals. I don't have anything against either group yet you keep telling me that the world is going to end; one saying I need to save my soul, the other saying I need to save my coal. Even if the world was going to sizzle to a crisp because we breathe too much and can't change that, there will be life left. Not humans, but life. Besides, I'm convinced you're wrong.

I merely look at scientific evidence. Has nothing to do with some major excitement that the world is going to end soon. It's not going to happen in my lifetime. The fact is, we're responsible for the future. And the fact is, we're not guaranteeing a very good future at the moment. Anyway, without going further, I will just say that I hope you don't truly believe that animals exhaling carbon has any effect on global climate change. If you do, I can understand why you think I'm wrong.
I was exaggerating. ... ( 3 months ago by keyan99)
I was exaggerating. But scientific evidence is the place to look. We probably just look at it differently. This is what I meant with the religious comparison: same world, different views. There is never going to be consensus until one of us is proved wrong. That's why I don't like these discussions on here. They are really time consuming and nothing gets solved. I respect your view though. Have a good one.

Now that you know the consequences. Read the effects of those consequences. Five degrees is enough to throw off multiple ocean currents and weather patterns globally. If you don't think that's a big deal you should probably do some reading instead of worrying about the useless things Al Gore says.
I have. I have read ... ( 1 month ago by CloseAnon)
I have. I have read the papers. The ones that are supposed to be scary. The most critical papers say that living standards will only raise to 1.8 times the level that they are today for most developed countries instead of 2, or 8.5 instead of 9.5 for underdeveloped countries. So how much of a change do they -really- expect us to make? So they lost their 0.2x Not to consider that the fact of predicting the climate of 100+ years is laughable with such a poor understanding of the climate system.
