Cass WV Steam Train

Uploaded by: tcomden
Video Description:
Our Cass train was hauled by a Shay and a Heisler. Both are geared locomotives, designed for use with steep grades and sharp curves (which abound at Cass, a former lumber line). The Shays are the big attraction at Cass -- it has the largest collection of operating Shays in the world.
The locos are always on the downhill end of the train (for safety reasons), so they basically push the cars up Bald Mountain, then pull them down again. There are two locos going up (for speed and power), and just one coming down (when gravity helps!). The brakes on the cars are used during the descent to keep the train under careful control, especially on the switchbacks where the locomotive is at the uphill end.

Wow...I thought coming down the mountain in Altoona was bad. That looks really steep! I couldn't imagine bringing 16,000 tons down that baby! Talk about holding on for dear life!

Great video. Great whistle sound.......BUT: this exessive whistling is childish and is a typical museum railway desease here in Europe, too. It destroys every illusion of a time journey and reminds one, that one is traveling with a tourist /museum line.....where the enthusiastic engineer is trying to whistle a song with the train whistle.

nice comment but it's no the Smokey Moutains - this is an original WV line that is now run by the state of WV as a tourist attraction - and they use the original train and engines that they service themselves!
There are actually ... ( 11 months ago by wvtriker)
There are actually several crossings that the whistle has to be sounded for. They also use the whistle to communicate with the others trains: 1 toot=stop, 2=forward, 3=reverse.
And this ... ( 11 months ago by megatwingo)
And this communication happened here in the video? I doubt it.
Here in Germany the trains normally made in former times only short "toot" and started their journey. That
´s the way I like it. Short, loud, no playing arround. Nowadays in the museum railways they start to whistle a kind of individual looooooong stretched whistletone and several other laughable "whistle gimmicks". It´s so ridiculous, if the engineer can´t resist to play arround with the whistle. Kit

LOL at what ... ( 11 months ago by lostchord359)
LOL at what Wingatmingo said below. The excessive whistle blasts are done to keep the tourists happy, & neccessary for all the crossings. They can't afford to have anything happen to thes irreplaceable engines either, so.... Besides, That Crosby 3 chimer sounds better than any of those high pitch shrilly European whistles. I suppose you never heard of Boxcar Willie either?
Megatwingo, If you ... ( 11 months ago by lostchord359)
Megatwingo, If you don't like those neccessary whistle blasts, then don't listen to them! Stop posting your ridiculous comments here. Those "neccessary" whistle blasts are common practice in ALL N. American railroads, & are required by LAW. I guess you don't have dangerous intersections & pedestrian traffic in Germany though....

Everyone who likes steam should visit. They rent houses in town by the day or week, and there is alot to see and do. A nearby ski resort can top the trip also. I been several times and plan to keep going back! The whistle in the mountains is great, dont stop no matter what any moron says negative about it!
Also worth visiting ... ( 9 months ago by tcomden)
Also worth visiting is the National Radio Astronomical Observatory in Green Bank, just down the road from Cass. We stayed overnight in Cass, the house was basic, not deluxe, because our prime objective was the railroad.
