I rented a Grand Prix for a couple of weeks in So Cal, so I decided to take advantage of the fact that it wasn't mine.
The maneuver is started in reverse at 30mph. Once stabilized, it's taken out of gear into neutral, then the engine is quickly taken all the the way to the rev limiter. Once there, the transmission is thrown into drive and the tire-roasting fun begins. The handling gets really drifty, because ev
en though the front tires are technically still pulling the car in the correct direction, there is still no friction holding the front-end of the car to the road - because the tires are spinning and smoking! End result is that under these conditions, the front-wheel drive car behaves as a rear-whee
l drive car coming off the line with no traction. I used this effect to whip the car into the narrow slot in the parking lot. Don't do it too many times though, or in an old car. The impulse force on the transmission and drivetrain is HUGE when its slammed from neutral into drive like that.
