To clarify the "playing of their own instruments" question. Studio musicians were used in many records in the '60s, and were in theirs. However, Mickey could play the drums and did, Mike and Peter played quite-good guitar and keyboards, and they all could sing well. They played when performing on their own often, and played in the studio with studio musicians. (There are many groups for which this is the case, then and now.)

That's totally false. Mike and Peter were (and are!) amazingly talented musicians. Micky and Davy werre good guitarists even though Davy got stuck playing tamborine and Micky became the drummer (he took lessons and is very good). After their first 2 albums they fought for the right to play their own instruments and won. Peter, Mike and Micky were also great songwriters.
