Yes bob dylan covered this. Yes bob dylan has recorded the best version in my mind. The Animals version is way to overblown to sound really authentic, the organ solos and the whole big vocals and bombastic feel of their versions ruins it. This is only Bob and his acoustic guitar and his rough vocals....this is what the song is meant to sound like. Bob sings it as if this actually happened in his life! This version is by far superior to the Animals version. If you like overblown go with Animals.

Yes indeed, it in all likelihood goes back to the 19th century. Dylan heard Dave Van Ronk playing it in Greenwich village, and borrowed his arrangement (without asking) for this recording in '62. Van Ronk then had to stop playing it when people accused him of stealing it from Dylan. Then, in '64, the Animals rearranged it into a rock song (possibly after hearing Dylan's version) and ironically he had to stop playing when people accused him of stealing it from The Animals

Well, Mr. Rock History, maybe you can tell me, how the song that Dylan wrote was first recorded by Clarence Ashley in 1933 who said he learned the song from his grandfather. I'm sure Dylan wrote Streets of Laredo, too, smart guy. Maybe The Farmer in the Dell. Now you look like a bit of an idiot, huh? And everyone knows it, too. Do your homework, genius.

No idea who performed it first, but I like the animals version better. Mostly because the singer in the animals has a voice that suits the song like a glove. This version is good as well though.
