Freddie was sadly ill at that time with full-blown AIDS and, though trough strong medication could record many more songs, he never returned to the stage, 'cause he was falling on his legs.
The proof of vital force of this man is the only thing than can exceed his superb and unique talent.
He hated playback (look at what he did in San Remo Festival when he was forced to sing in playback).

who cares if it was playback...freddie was ill when he made this appearance,AIDS is a difficult disease to fight with and even if he did playback the performance was good and the song breathtaking

This is lip-synced, I'm afraid. The instruments - at least some of them - maybe aren't aren't, but the singing definitely is, both Caballe's and Mercury's. There are no mikes (not even those classical music ones you've seen so often in front of Pavarotti and the likes), and the voices are 100% identical to what they are on the record. Plus, the chorus bit (Freddie singing "Barcelona") still has typical studio overlays & effects in it that you just cannot recreate live.

Yes it is lip synced but the reason behind this was that Freddie was not well.
But my god what a song, gets the old hairs up on the back of the neck, a real powerful cataclismic record of biblical proportion Freddie is surely has one of the most powerful vocals in rock / pop

This is actually one of my favorite songs with Freddie. It's absolutly breathtaking and I always end up crying at the end. And he's a real performer, because he gives no show of his desise. And he is really, really sick. Freddie will always be my inspiration.

Yes, it was full playback, they have no mics (not even unvisible in-ear-solutions) and the big black boxes in front are the monitors for them to keep on track. Freddie is nearly bursting to MOVE around the stage but without a mic - impossible. Nevertheless this was a really GREAT performance, full of emotion and adorable. ;-)
